Wolverhampton Civic Hall 1988 full video posted at smithstorrents.co.uk

Does anyone know what t-shirt he is wearing for the encore? Can't quite make it out. Thanks in advance.

Dying to know as well! Plus Andy Rourkes basslines were 'really that good.' For the anons criticising the musicianship the gig was a celebratory event. Which this film perfectly conveys.

You'd probably moan about Keith Richards missing his guitar parts at Altamont

Here you go - looks like a PETA t-shirt to me :)

Many thanks for leaking this one!!!!

The now awful (but good at the time) NME have picked up the story.
Didn't know I went to a Smiths gig in 88!
Journalists who lie indeed!

It's weird. It maybe not an official Smiths gig, but maybe NME just picked up on the fact that everyone on the stage is from The Smiths and playing a few Smiths songs.

It's strange that Marr was phoned up to attend the gig and play...I wonder if that's true?

as all have said before, this is amazing footage and big thanks to moztictac for sharing. i was wondering whether the video would make an appearance after the soundboard vinyl release last month but was still sceptical that it would ever see the light of day so would love to know the background as to how it got here...and where the other footage from that day might be.

i got into the smiths in early 1987 so just missed out on seeing them live, i have been to every moz tour since 1991 but sadly missed out on this gig. i was a student in glasgow at the time and remember finding out about it the day before and contemplating spending what little spare cash i had on a round trip train ride to wolverhampton on the off-chance of getting in the queue and getting into the venue....the t-shirt and no ticket thing just put me off as it was a complete lottery...so I decided instead to finish my coursework and attended my lectures instead. :-( still regret it to this day!!! and have been waiting for the footage ever since.

as stated earlier, this type of amazing find (see also the pablo cuckoo share a couple of months back) is the reason i have been coming to this site since the late 90s...so thanks again!

I couldn't imagine to see this, one day. I thought the video was lost somewhere, that we should just be happy to see "Sister". Incredible. So happy.

Forget Star Trek, Iron Man, even Hangover 3...
Waaaay better than any movie I can think of...at last, at last, Wolverhampton!

Now that we've seen and end and a beginning, let's re-live the beginning.

Look at how happy and cocky Johnny seemed at the beginning, he even sang backup too!

Worst gig ever.

Interesting to look back at Passions Just Like Mine... http://web.archive.org/web/20070816090836id_/http://www.passionsjustlikemine.com/gigs/moz-g88.htm

Morrissey on this concert "There was a radiant feeling onstage. You knew where everybody was and who they were, which was astonishingly good."

And of course the line that is on every gig review: Were you there? Do you have a recording of this concert? If yes please contribute information and be credited.

Oh, how I miss Passions Just Like Mine....

I wonder who Julian and Mouse are / were?

And yet the sun still rises...

Absolutely mesmerizing, thank you.

This reminds me of why I avoided Morrissey during those years: thank goodness...

I love everything in this video : the 1988 style, the crowd, the atmosphere, the live performance. I do adore the "Disappointed" version, so powerful. Mozz is perfect.

You're kidding right? That's how I refer to my mom.

I live in a place called Willenhall in a little area called New Invention.

I went to Sneyd school , Vernon way , bloxwich.

I can assure you , I'm British all right....do you need more

Black Country la la la .... I know Willenhall - I am from Cradley Heath.

I am pretty sure I read about the gig in the NME at the time. I was a 17 year old student and it remains one my greatest gigs.

It was freezing in the queue - I queued for 29 hours in my grey There is a Light T-shirt ( I bought it at a Smiths convention at Carrs Lane up Brum )

I could go on and on about that night ....

Still a massive fan.

Del.
