The US is "ready for another revolution", Sarah Palin told conservative activists last night in a keynote speech to the first national tea party convention in Nashville which also roundly condemned Barack Obama.

"This movement is about the people," the 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee said last night to cheers. "Government is supposed to be working for the people."

Mocking Obama's 2008 campaign slogan, Palin noted Democrats' state electoral losses since Obama took office a year ago with talk of hope and promises of change, asking: "How's that hopey, changey stuff workin' out for you?"

Her audience waved flags and gave a series of standing ovations as Palin addressed the tea party gathering, an anti-establishment, grassroots network motivated by anger over the growth of government, public spending and Obama's policies.

The convention opened on Thursday night with a controversial speech by Tom Tancredo, a former Republican congressman who ran for president in 2008. Focusing mainly on illegal immigration, he invoked segregationist ideas by saying Obama had been elected because "we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote in this country".

Palin's address was less incendiary overall. Peppered with her trademark folksy jokes, it amounted to a 45-minute pep talk for the coalition and promotion of its principles. But, aside from broad conservative principles like lower taxes and a strong national defence, it was short on policy ideas that might indicate serious plans to run for the White House.

Palin talked of limited government, strict adherence to the constitution, and the "God-given right" of freedom. She said the "fresh, young and fragile" movement was the future of American politics and "a ground-up call to action" to both major political parties to change how they do business. "You've got both party machines running scared," she said.

Palin suggested that the party should remain leaderless and cautioned against allowing the movement to be defined by any one person. "This is about the people" and "it's a lot bigger than any charismatic guy with a teleprompter," she said, a dig at Obama.

The former Alaska governor, who resigned from office last summer before completing her first term, didn't indicate whether her political future would extend beyond cable news punditry and paid speeches to an actual presidential candidacy.

All she offered was a smile when a moderator asking her questions used the phrase "President Palin." That prompted most in the audience to stand up and chant: "Run, Sarah, run!"

Palin said she would not keep her $100,000 (£64,000) fee for speaking at the event, and would return it to "the cause".

Activists paid £350 to attend the entire three-day gathering, or £225 just to hear Palin's speech after a dinner of lobster and steak at the sprawling Gaylord hotel. The cost led to criticism from some activists that it runs counter to the coalition's image and could preclude people from attending.

Sarah Palin would be absolutely hilarious if she weren't so scary, and if people didn't take her as seriously as they do. She's an idiot who is actively anti-intellectual--for example, she doesn't believe in evolution and natural selection. Not believing in evolution is like not believing in gravity, or not believing that the Earth is round.

I'm having a laugh reading these socialists commenting on the Tea Party movement. The Tea Party movement is the most exciting thing to happen in American politics in my lifetime! And the Tea Party movement has already cluster-f***ed the Obama-Pelosi-Reid government and their shills in the media, when Brown siezed Teddy Kennedy's Senate seat! Keep calling us "tea baggers"!

I love to see Worm chiming in with his usual straight-from-the-DNC talking points. Worm, of course, lectured us all that there was nothing to be worried about with respect to Barack Obama having spent 20 years of his life in the pews of the filthy racist church of Rev. Jeremiah. Actually, Worm, that was pretty much ALL one needed to know about Barack Obama.

Well, now the majority of the American people feel that the Obama administration is trying to ram a socialist agenda down our throats against our will. And the people are pushing back.

Let Worm worry his little head off about a movement of Americans who actually wanna preserve our freedom. We've got this Barack Obama by the balls. It turned out to be a blessing that Obama won the election. Had McCain won, the waters would still be muddy. Now everything is becoming very clear to the American people.

Although I am extremely pessimistic about the chances of success, I think the better idea by far is Obama's attempt at restoring bi-partisanship. Short of radical "D: None Of The Above" options, fixing the two-party systems as it is may be the only choice. I really don't think the tea baggers are an option, and I don't even think they're symbolically useful. I say that without knocking the idiots with the signs on TV, but attempting to take the serious tea baggers at their best.

It's pretty comical that you take Obama's "attempt at restoring bipartisanship" seriously. That phoney talk is a move of poitical strategy.

But not as comical as you thinking someone should take your commentary about the Tea Party movement seriously when you refer to us as people dipping our nutsacks into other people's mouths ("tea baggers").

You're an Obama shill, Worm. And Obama is a disaster. Step out of the way. We're taking our country back.

To be more clear: No one buys this sudden desire for bipartisanship. It's what Obama had once promised and was a promise he broke. We need to start again with a clean slate.

I don't think Obama is a disaster. He can only sign the bills that land on his desk.

The real disaster is the fact that the entire congress is so caught up in saying no to anything the other side says that nothing gets done.

Historically the liberals are pussies. When the liberals have power they won't flex their muscle. When the conservatives have power they do and when they need a few votes from the other side of the aisle the liberals cave in and give them what they need.

So who is worse? The GOP for going out of their way to make sure they stop the DEMs from passing bills or the DEMs for helping the GOP when the favour is never returned?

Ultimately I think it doesn't matter. Both sides are crap.

I'm having a cup of tea now in work.

If Ms.Palin wants to speak, she is more than welcome. :thumb:

I can only pay in digestive biscuits, though.
