Wow!! this is why The Smiths are the best band of the last 30 years

Amazingly wonderful. :)

What's sick about this is that is just a band in a small club, 3 instruments, 1 singer and it sounds THAT good. No effects, nothing.

I wonder who else was on the bill that night that flew into obscurity yet The Smiths went on to become one of the best bands of all time.

Good point Kiss My Shades.

Everyone knows nowadays that M&M meticlously planned everything and had an amazing confidence in each others ability...

BUT DO YOU THINK, looking at this footage, they had an realisation at this moment in time of how singularly special they were????

I would say the way they are in these songs..... it must have been like seeing the Beatles (Quarrymen) play in Hamburg but so much more resonant.. IMHO THIS IS HOW IMPORTANT THIS FOOTAGE IS

I think their confidence is what helped them become one of the best bands ever. I think Johnny has mentioned that in interviews before. I'd like to think even at that moment that they knew they'd be big.

Well I wonder...not. :) :guitar:

I have just checked the excellent ''Passions Just Like Mine' site and came up with this
''The Manchester Hacienda concert from 6 July was professionally filmed and the footage has made it onto the bootleg market.
An earlier Hacienda concert from 4 February was professionally filmed but the video footage is not widely circulated yet''.
From the setlist on the footage given on this thread it would appear to be from the July gig.
The third and final Hacienda gig in November was not filmed.
I have the bootleg audio from the February gig (which - according to the excellent ''Morrissey's Manchester'' was The Smiths third ever gig;)) but would love to see a film of it:guitar::guitar:

The new Manchester heroes returned home to play before a crowd of 1500 fans who packed the Hacienda to full capacity. Many had brought flowers and the place was drowning in them, with a heavy perfume in the air. The Smiths had just returned from their first appearance on Top Of The Pops ("This charming man" )so it was quite late when they came on, but they were still received as heroes. Frank Worrall, from the Melody Maker: "Even before they took the stage, girls were being pulled aside for treatment after fainting and too much screaming".

WOW..I have a copy of the July Hacienda concert for years but I've never seen the footage of the November Hacienda concert. The crowd seems much more enthusiastic in the November one.It must be something to do with having been on Top of the pops earlier that evening.
