I assume you are talking about radio sessions. These are a great way of promoting your music, trying new ideas, testing the water with different versions of songs before they find themselves on albums or singles, and quite often radio sessions have proved to be some of the most definitive versions.
The peel sessions and BBC session series are essential parts of any punk/indie/alternative bands back catalogue.
