Was just reading the appendix about matrix messages in Songs That Saved Your Life and been checking my old Smiths vinyl.

My copy of Meat Is Murder - cat no ROUGH 81, UK original - doesn't have any messages on the run out groove. It SHOULD have 'Illness as art' on the A and 'Doing the Wythenshawe Waltz' on the B. Then I rang up my brother who also had an original copy and he said his didn't have it either.

So, please, everybody out there with a copy of Meat Is Murder on vinyl - can you see if you have matrix messages or not? And if you HAVE then please tell me what cat no is or where it says it was made. Maybe me and me bruv just bought a dud batch!

can you please explain what a matrix message is?

It's a message scratched in (by hand) to the vinyl where the recording runs out i.e. near the lable

BY HAND!!!! THAT MUST HAVE TAKEN DECADES

> BY HAND!!!! THAT MUST HAVE TAKEN DECADES

Yes, and it was done by monks.

is it true?

By hand? Is this true?

All those copies of my Smiths and Moz singles, and the thousands of others available. A lot of work no?

How matrix messages were put on - and PLEASE help?

I believe that the way it worked was that Morrissey or Marr would do it just the once on the master press copy which was used to print/press off all the copies.

But anyway - PLEASE can somebody look at their Meat Is Murder and tell me if these matrix messages/run-out groove slogans are there or not.

Re: Maybe a response to "A Porky Prime Cut"

One of the most common messages in vinyl is "A Porky Prime Cut" see link below for info:

Maybe Morrissey was retaliating for all this mention of pork.

I wouldn't mind betting ten bob George that there is a message on your copy somewhere. I don't have a copy of M.I.M on vinyl because I would always buy cassette tapes in the eighties but 7" and 12" Smiths records always had a matrix message though some were harder to spot than others.
