Margaret Sanger (1884-1966)
Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, worked first as a nurse where she learned first-hand of the health and social problems of too many pregnancies. Margaret Sanger spent time in jail to fight for sex education, distribution of contraceptive information and contraceptives. For some time she also was aligned with the eugenics movement. Margaret Sanger lived long enough to see the practice of birth control declared a constitutional right in 1965.
For being someone in my life time that is an immediately accessible example of how one person can make a difference.
(I know lots of people can't stand him and disagree with what he says/does but that's not what I'm saying here, I'm just saying that he's my hero because he was the person who made me see how much potential each of us has to make the changes we don't think possible.)
it has alot of symbolism to do with heroism for me
and yes yes, feel free to misinterpret much of it
particularly the Totenkopf http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totenkopf
which predates the Nazis by loads but most are too lazy to carry otherwise
