Christmas records

Question: Are there any Christmas records worth owning?

The radio seems to have a constant crap playlist. The most interesting Christmas song I ever heard was the Cocteau Twins' version of 'Frosty the Snowman' on the 'Snow' EP. It was hilarious - not the sort of song I'd expect from them. It's lovely because it also shows they don't take themselves too seriously. Morrissey once introduced 'Satan...' as his Christmas single but it doesn't count 'cos it wasn't released until January!

i assume that you are looking either for an album that has something besides "jingle bells" or at least interesting interpretations of the standards.

The charlie brown christmas soundtrack is a good one. its warm and jazzy.

there is another one by the Chieftains if you are looking for something more celtic sounding. they have a variety of guest artists sit in with the songs like Elvis Costello, and a lot of the album is full of songs that are out of the ordinary.

Funny You Should Mention...

I just got a cool X-mas gift from some friends last week in the mail: a card with a burned CD featuring waaaaay cool Holiday tunes from over the years including:

Thanks For Christmas- XTC (A.K.A. The Three Wismen)
Christmas Time is Here Again- The Beatles (dude- it's the f***in' BEATLES, man!!)
Do They Know It's Christmas- Band Aid (I remember when that came out- still the best X-Mas pop song of all time)
Last Christmas - Wham! (hysterically funny- the lyrics are soooooo gay now that you know George is out of the closet)
Chritmas In Heaven - Monty Python (enough said)
Chritsmas Blues (Are Gettin Me Down) - The "Boss" (great send-up of Springsteen's classic)
A Very Heston Christmas -KROQ's Kevin and Bean (Ol' Santa gets home invaded by Charlton Heston and the Elves fill the old NRA geezer full of lead)
Donna and Blitzen - Badly Drawn Boy (great strings and piano- good stuff)
Santa Claus- Throwing Muses (wicked vocals)
Fairytale of New York- The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl (gotta love them funny Irish with them silly Irish lyrics)
Twelve Days Of Christams- Bob and Doug McKenzie (No X-Mas collection is complete without these 2 idiots)

So as disgusting as it sounds: just go to KaZaa and DOWNLOAD some great Holiday tunes to burn onto CD and share the Christmas Spirit!!

Re: its gotta be "Fairytale of New York" !!!!!

I agree. That's classic.

I'll also add U2's 'Baby Please Come Home 'It's Christmas' which I hope I can mention without starting a flame war.

Fear's 'F*ck Christmas' - best anti-Xmas song ever

Ramones' 'Merry Christmas (Baby I don't wanna fight tonight)' just because it's the Ramones

I'm sure I'm leaving some out.

Best Christmas Song Ever: "Father Christmas" by the Kinks

Some Additions

If I was making my own X-Mas CD I would include all the previously mentioned and add the following as well:

That Chrsitmas Song by the Waitresses
Evertyhting off Perry Como's Chrsitmas Album
That U2 Christmas Song
"The Little Drummer Boy" (version that David Bowie did with Bing Crosby)
All of the other Kevin & Bean X-Mas CD's

It has to be the Phil Spector Christmas album
- you gotta love that wall of sound

OH yeah! The Waitresses, my personal fav. That song list is awesome, if it was being sold somewhere I'd definately buy it. I've been looking for a CD like that for a long time....to busy/lazy to burn one for myself. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Some Additions

The Wedding Present's cover of Elton Wig John's "Stepping into Christmas" should be there.

Lyrics

1: It's Christmas time
There's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time
We let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmas time

2: But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it's hard
But when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing
Is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring
There are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time
Feed the world
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

3: And there won't be snow in Africa
This Christmas time
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
Where nothing ever grows
No rain nor rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

BRIDGE:
(Here's to you) raise a glass for everyone
(Here's to them) underneath that burning sun
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

END: Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time

END: (repeat & fade)

But when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
(Sting) And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is
(Bono joins in)
The bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that are ringing
Are clanging chimes of doom
(Bono only) Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you.

(Everyone)
And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time.
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?
