christian dior lyrics

Did anyone order the £5 CD/Vinyl package from recordstore.co.uk? For some reason, they have a consistency in posting singles before the release date -- I received mine in the post this morning. :)

Anyway, the lyrics are as follows:

Christian Dior
You wasted your life
On aroma and clothes
Fabric and dyes.

Christian Dior
You wasted your life
On grandeur and style
And making the poor rich smile.

You could have run wild
On the backstreets of Lyon or Marseille
Reckless and legless and stoned
Impregnating women
Or kissing mad street boys from Napoli
Who couldn't even write their own name

Christian Dior
You wasted your life
Sensually stroking the weaves of a sleeve.

You could have run wild
On the backstreets of Lyon or Marseille
Reckless and legless and stoned
Impregnating women
Or kissing mad street boys from Napoli
Who couldn't even spell the wrong name

Oh, Christian Dior
Oh, Christian Dior
(?)

When you look at me
Failure is all that you see
I discipline my days just like Christian Dior

I could've run loudly and proudly
Or forcible entrian
Morally bankrupt
And never known violent
And drawn to what scares me
And scared of what bores me
Years alone will never be returned.

Christian Dior
Lionise maverick, ah
Design if you can, ah
The way to just be a man, ah
To just be a man, ah

Christian Dior x4

---------------------------------

I can't quite discern the words in bold.

I'm hearing:

Sensually stroking the weave of a sleeve

---------------------------------------

Oh, Christian Dior
Oh, Christian Dior
Aaahoosh!
Aaahoosh!

----------------------------------------

I could've run loudly and proudly
Or forcible entry
And morally bankrupt
And never not violent
And drawn to what scares me
And scared of what bores me
Years alone will never be returned.

Will these count towards chart placings then?

Yes, that does make sense. Or though, to me, it does sound like he's saying "known" instead of "not" - but then again, your version would make more sense ....

Don't like the words.

Yet another song I can't relate to in any way, shape, or form.

You know, I think this is the first Morrissey song that has not one line in it that I find clever or interesting.

Even in the songs I didn't like on Quarry and Ringleader, there was always a litte something in them that made me appreciate it.

ok here are the words I am hearing on first listen!

(first of all want to sing Jason Donovan singing Close Every Door to Me..)

Christian Dior
You wasted your life
On women and clothes
Fabric and eyes
Christian Dior
You wasted your life
On grandeur and style and making the porridge smile

ah bored now, much the same as above.

I actually quite like this song! I might have it wrong, but I think it's about how Morrissey has just become a label? Like nobody acknowledges the fact that Christian Dior is actually a person, all Christian Dior is is a clothes label. Likewise, Morrissey might feel as if 'Morrissey' is just the label for his songs, and he's 'wasted his life' etc. I may have the complete wrong idea or just be stating the obvious, but for some reason I really like it :D.

"And drawn to what scares me
And scared of what bores me
Years alone will never be returned"

I really like these lines and it's also my favourite part of the song.

And the last bit! His voice! And the beginning, with piano and strings! Jesus, great track!

"I could have run loudly and proudly;
Or forcible entry;
And morally bankrupt;
Never known; violent
and drawn to...

After playing this track on repeat, it's become my favourite ROTT b-side along with Ganglord. It's quite a sweeping track, with excellent piano work from Mikey throughout. I really like Morrissey's vocal melody, especially how he draws out "Who couldn't even write their own name". The operatic "ahhs" and "awoosh!" remind me of something Queen might have done.

Thematically, I think it fits perfectly with Morrissey's newfound love of Italy and a freer, more hedonistic lifestyle. It's as if he's projecting himself on the figure of Dior to illustrate his own preoccupations with pop and the years he "lost" by focussing on that one obsession. Then, in the way he often does, it becomes "I" and he speaks directly. The line "Years alone will never be returned" is particularly affecting.

Listening on headphones and going through this thread, these are the lyrics I hear:

Christian Dior
You wasted your life
On aroma and clothes
Fabric and dyes.

Christian Dior
You wasted your life
On grandeur and style
And making the poor rich smile.

You could have run wild
On the backstreets of Lyon or Marseille
Reckless and legless and stoned
Impregnating women
Or kissing mad street boys from Napoli
Who couldn't even write their own name

Sensually stroking the weaves of a sleeve.

On the backstreets of Lyon or Marseille
Reckless and legless and stoned
Impregnating women
Or kissing mad street boys from Napoli
Who couldn't even spell their own name

Oh, Christian Dior
Oh, Christian Dior
Awoosh!
Awoosh!

When you look at me
Failure is all that you see
I discipline my days just like Christian Dior

I could've run loudly and proudly
Or forcible entry
And morally bankrupt
And never non-violent
And drawn to what scares me
And scared of what bores me
Years alone will never be returned.

Christian Dior
Lyonnaise maverick, ah (mispronounced as "lionize" (?) which grammatically doesn't make sense, or is it "LionizeD")
Design if you can, ah
The way to just be a man, ah
To just be a man, ah

Christian Dior x4

I'm glad someone agrees with the "non-violent."

I like your angle on lionise, Lyonnaise, and agree it could be incidental wordplay. You go on to talk about grammar which is not of number one importance in poetry. We know how Morrissey reveres originality and "Lionise maverick," makes perfect sense, poetically. "Lionised," fits too, but I don't hear the 'd' sound. With these final lines in the song,

"Lionise (treat someone as a celebrity or hero, venerate) maverick (non-conformist, independant, or an unbranded animal)
Design if you can
The way to just be a man
To just be a man",

it seems the writing is on the wall. Morrissey does not fit in to the design, he designed his own life. He sympathises with Dior as he did Pasolini, as he did James Dean, as he did...,

I'm just waiting for someone to agree with "All forcible entry."

On a side note, I really do like the woosh sound where I imagine someone misting themselves with perfume, and the grandiose ending which suits the subject of a such a glamourous culture. I can't mention the ending without the intro - how beautiful and gentle. There is much to be said about this song but I have to eat something or I'm likely not going to live to enjoy it.
