Johnny Marr interview in "Visions" (Germany)
Thanks to elsberry
for the following news and for the "loosely
translated" excerpt. Try Babel
Fish for an even looser translation of the whole
interview. From elsberry:
Here's an extract
from August's issue of the German magazine "Visions"
with a lengthy
interview with Johnny Marr. Excerpt:
Q:
Despite you are one of the most important and influential
guitarists in the British music scene you`ve always
preferred to earn your daily bread as a session musician for
others or collaborate with other loners. Have you never had
the intention of impersonating the role of the bandleader or
to put into practice your musical ideas all by yourself?
J.M: I don't know exactly why but I've always seen
myself as the one musical part of a double-headed monster.
Saying that I must mention that the basis for these
collaborations has always been real friendships which is why
I never missed anything. Apart from that I love this extreme
intensive energy which emerges between two people working
together at a musical project. But meanwhile I've got the
self-esteem and conviction that I could as well try it
alone. Also each collaboration which I could do from now
would mean a descent because Bernard Sumner is such a good
human being and musician it can't be topped.
Q: So a Johnny Marr solo album is soon to come?
J.M.: I`m working on it at the moment, some of the songs
have already been written. In this context, there are only
two problems left: I've been looking for the right musicians
with whom I get along as human beings and who don't
constantly drop the drumstick out of nervousness only
because they are rehearsing with Johnny Marr for a very long
time now. Secondly I'm very unsatisfied with the results of
my singing and the writing of the lyrics. That has to
improve.
