Bowing at No. 11 with "You Are the Quarry" (Attack/Sanctuary), Morrissey not only scores the highest position of his solo career but also beats out any chart placement he had with the Smiths. The set sold 56,000 copies in its first week, far exceeding 1997's "Maladjusted" (Mercury), which opened with just 19,000 and a No. 61 perch; the set has sold 87,000 to date.

Just an quick information that "You Are The Quarry" entered the Top 10 of the german album chart at #7. Can't remember that he has ever been so high in our charts.

"Irish Blood, English Heart" had already entered the Top 100 single charts at #65.

According to IFOP , YATQ enters at #21 on France Albums Chart. Hum, not his highest position in charts, but perhaps he will better this one in the next weeks...

You Are The Quarry has entered the Dutch Album Top 100 at #30, the highest entry for this week. If trends set by Alanis Morissette (now #1 in its second week after entering at #43) and Lenny Kravitz (#3 from #97, also in its second week) are anything to go by, this bodes well. (But don't hold your breath.)

Actually, I'm already satisfied by the fact that the album is currently easily outselling Britney Spears and No Doubt, not to mention Marillion (steady at #43 in its third week — bye bye, boys) and Atomic Kitten (at #51 down from #35 in only its third week — ouch!).

John, England writes:

Do not despair at Quarry's failure to reach number one!

Chart positions, it would seem, can be exceedingly misleading.

According to figures published in Music Week today (26th May), 'Vauxhall and I' reached number one with just 25,000 sales back in 94 whereas Quarry sold 75,000 in its first week. I imagine a Gold disc (100,000 sales) should be on the cards but, clearly, the sooner 'The First of the Gang' is released, the better!

theres a mini interview with him at the recording of jools. some quotes:

'I did try to play (Manchester), but the venues I wanted were occupied by Mother Goose'

"I was always too frightened to hope that there would be good times again, but there are. And (when I heard) that the midweek for the album was number one - thats just so exciting. To me anyway, to the rest of the world it's tedium, but to me it's just like an episode of Starsky and Hutch, it's incredibly exciting."

After contacting someone in charge of the MELTDOWN Festival via the website for the Royal Festival Hall, I have finally heard back from someone regarding the cancellation of the event, "We Are All In The Gutter: An Evening With Oscar Wilde," which was scheduled for June 13th as part of Morrissey's MELTDOWN Festival.

According to the co-coordinator for the Meltdown Festival, "the Oscar Wilde evening has indeed had to be cancelled. The original director of the event dropped out and we were unable to find a suitable replacement."

When I had also asked if Mr. Merlin Holland (Wilde's grandson) was considered amongst the "Special Guests" I was told, "As far as I'm aware Merlin was not part of the original line up."
