Just got my May 21, 2004, issue of Entertainment Weekly and noticed that there's a 4-page interview with Morrissey.

Flipping through the magazine, I first noticed his picture on page 5 with the caption:

"The dark lyrics, the sunny melodies, the sharp opinions: Original mope rocker Morrissey is back (page 34)"

Since my scanner went to hell, here's a transcript of the interview/article entitled "Happiness Is a Sad Song."

Enjoy!

Morrissey is resigned to being a solitary man. But what really breaks his heart are Britney, Mick Jagger, and 'American Idol.' -- By Michael Kochman

I work at the BBC and I was lucky enough to attend the studio recording of Top Of The Pops last night. Morrissey will be on next Friday singing Irish Blood...

It was an interesting night - most of the 14-year-old audience didn't have a clue who Mozzer was, and it was up to about ten of us in the studio to get to the front (after standing through two hours of proper dirge like Will Young, Frankie and some Norweigan Flop Idol bloke who looked like a troll) and make as much noise as possible to show the great man and the band that they weren't floundering in a sea of teeny-bopper hell...

Moz looked completely bored beforehand, but was the utmost professional. They all looked amazing though - all the band had Jobriath T-shirts on, with black trousers and braces - proper scary, dead hard and they were all shooting evil looks into the cameras - classic!

To be honest, I couldn't quite believe he was standing there bang smack in front of me. If you'd told me ten years ago that I would be in the audience at Top Of The Pops and Morrissey would be performing, I'd have laughed in your face. So all in all, a bit of a surreal evening...

The show airs Friday, May 21 at 7:30pm on BBC1.

Morrissey enters USA singles chart at #4
May 14, 2004 MORRISSEY ENTERS USA SINGLES CHART AT #4
“Irish Blood, English Heart” debuts on Billboard’s Singles Chart

"Irish Blood, English Heart," the first single from Morrissey's forthcoming album YOU ARE THE QUARRY, has debuted at #4 on the Billboard singles chart. The stellar sales debut of Morrissey’s first new recording in 7 years reflects the commitment and support of Morrissey’s loyal fans and alternative radio airplay on tastemaker stations KROQ LA and WXRK NY as well as video airplay on VH1. Morrissey's recent five night stands at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre and New York's Apollo Theatre both sold out in minutes. The New Musical Express declared "This song is solid proof that sometimes, only rarely, the best melodies combine with the best lyrics and the best performances, and at the point where those three elements meet we find not only the perfect pop song but the perfect pop single." Rolling Stone said “The album, like Morrissey's tenor, never stops defining and reinventing itself. The world, as Morrissey leaps to declare in one song, continues to be full of crashing bores. But YOU ARE THE QUARRY is a triumph of maladjusted vitality"

Morrissey will begin a weeklong residency on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn on Monday, May 24. He will also headline this year's installment of the Lollapalooza festival.

YOU ARE THE QUARRY is to be released on Sanctuary/Attack on May 18.
