I haven't heard where Morrissey is in the actual Billboard singles charts but he is #4 in the Soundscan Singles chart (3773 units), which is purely sales.

1. Clay Aiken, "Solitaire / The Way", sales tw: 9553, sales lw: 10506
2. Jojo, "Leave (get Out)", sales tw: 6787, sales lw: 5701
3. Kimberley Locke, "8th World Wonder", sales tw: 4059, sales lw: 4810
4. Morrissey, "Irish Blood, English Heart", sales tw: 3773, sales lw: 13
5. Kelis, "Milkshake", sales tw: 2265, sales lw: 2432

Morrissey enters USA singles chart at #4
May 14, 2004 MORRISSEY ENTERS USA SINGLES CHART AT #4
“Irish Blood, English Heart” debuts on Billboard’s Singles Chart

"Irish Blood, English Heart," the first single from Morrissey's forthcoming album YOU ARE THE QUARRY, has debuted at #4 on the Billboard singles chart. The stellar sales debut of Morrissey’s first new recording in 7 years reflects the commitment and support of Morrissey’s loyal fans and alternative radio airplay on tastemaker stations KROQ LA and WXRK NY as well as video airplay on VH1. Morrissey's recent five night stands at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre and New York's Apollo Theatre both sold out in minutes. The New Musical Express declared "This song is solid proof that sometimes, only rarely, the best melodies combine with the best lyrics and the best performances, and at the point where those three elements meet we find not only the perfect pop song but the perfect pop single." Rolling Stone said “The album, like Morrissey's tenor, never stops defining and reinventing itself. The world, as Morrissey leaps to declare in one song, continues to be full of crashing bores. But YOU ARE THE QUARRY is a triumph of maladjusted vitality"

Morrissey will begin a weeklong residency on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn on Monday, May 24. He will also headline this year's installment of the Lollapalooza festival.

YOU ARE THE QUARRY is to be released on Sanctuary/Attack on May 18.

  • This is an incredibly low amount to get to number one in a country of 250 million people! I guess the U.S. has absolutely no singles market at all these days?

Here in the UK you'd need to sell on average at least 5 times this amount to get to number four in the singles charts, and the population is only a fifth of that of the US.

  • This #4 ranking for Moz is the Billboard Top 100 Singles Sales Chart.

An actual top 40 position in the USA is premised on several factors as set forth in this link:

    http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/top-401.htm

To find out how many record (album) sales are needed for silver, gold and platinum status:

    http://www.morrissey-solo.com/articles/03/06/24/151218.shtml

Platinum means shipments of 300,000, gold 100,000 and silver 60,000

Those are the UK numbers. You can see the figures for the USA @ the RIAA. www.riaa.com

  • "4. Morrissey, "Irish Blood, English Heart", sales tw: 3773, sales lw: 13"

So there are 3,786 real fans in America.

Nah, there must be more. They're not selling Morrissey's single in very many stores, I don't if people realize that. Also, I bet a lot of the indie record stores that might have it aren't plugged into this soundscan system???

I, too, am shocked by how low the numbers are to chart on this soundscan thing. Opens the door for...well, for us to potentially get him to Number 1 on the next single. I'm not sure if Gang is gonna be released as anything more than a radio/MTV single in the USA (so far it's only listed as an import on Amazon), but if it is I'll make sure to buy more than one. = )

Fuck it, Dude. Let's go bowling.
  • Just bought the single...and what can i say? Morrissey seems to be just getting better and better with his music...it seems like he never disappear over this past couple of years. Thanks Morrissey for bringing back what's been missing quite some time in the music industry...talent.

  • I find it hard to believe Moz is #4 on any chart in the USA. The Best Buy in my home town still doesn't have the single. Maybe next week they will.
