A previously unbroadcast Morrissey performance ("Roy's Keen", performed 5.9.97) will be shown on TOTP2 on Wednesday 5th February, on BBC2 at 6.20pm.

TOTP2 lineup, Feb. 5 - Morrissey

This is the first ever showing of this performance, so forgive us for being a touch excited. Also, for those who don't appeciate ol' Mozza, look away as we embark on a glittering, near-sycophantic ramble about Manchester's finest.

'Roy's Keen' isn't a tribute to Irelands's most mentalist footballer, but an over-eager window cleaner. A far cry from the overly-direct 'Thatcher On The Guillotine' it may be, but this song is brimming with Morrissey's charm and skill with a tune.

'Roy's Keen' failed to reach the Top 40. Alas, the masses were too ensconsed with the Spice Girls to bother raising the manc misery from No.42. Shame.

Just a quick heads up--yesterday I was watching MTV's "Cribs" showcase the home of members of New Found Glory. While interviewing the lead singer, he showed the camera a picture of a Smiths sticker on his vehicle, then told the audience, "people tell me I look like Morrissey". He then proceeded to give a frightening rendition of Hand in Glove. A short video clip of Mozzer was shown side by side. Predictably, it was no comparison.

Nef also writes:

New Found Glory was on MTV's Cribs tonight, and one of the gits in the band has a Smiths sticker on his Mini Cooper.

So he goes on about how much he was into the Smiths and Morrissey when he was younger, and says he's told he looks like Morrissey. He actually looks quite a bit more like Quentin Tarantino, except even uglier. Whether so as you can note the resemblence or so that the kiddos will know who Morrissey is, they then play 2 or 3 seconds of the Boy Racer video with the NFG joker superimposed over it.

Johnny Marr is briefly interviewed in the latest edition of Record Collector magazine (article not published online) about his new album with the Healers, but tellingly replies to the final question about a possible future reunion with Morrissey with the words:

'God, I hope not'.

Johnny Marr & The Healers officially entered the UK chart at number 78 with their debut single "Bangin' On". Just a bit related to the poll - would Morrissey reach the top 40?

The NME has a regular weekly feature where bands select 10 or so of their favourite songs for an 'ultimate compilation'. This week it's The Thrills who've included 'First Of The Gang To Die'. "we heard him play this on a talk show in the US. Can't wait for his new album - another classic no doubt."

Moz also gets a mention in the letters page where in a response to a letter about Nirvana, the journo writes: "Nirvana had a couple of good songs, but gimme Morrissey (and others), lyricists who underpin their misery with wit and perspective, rather than Nirvana's self-pity."

Just got back from that annual NME shindig where four new bands play thier way around the country. This year the players were The Datsuns, The Polyphonic Spree, Interpol and The Thrills (the support from the Albert Hall shows remember?). Despite being the bottom act, The Thrills totally blew the competition out of the water and stole the show. During The Datsuns set I was lucky enough to have a few words with Thrills guitarist. As I was wearing my Moz shirt, the conversation drifted on to him and he said how they were all massive fans. He touched upon the recent story in NME about them going for a drink and talked about how funny he is!!

if you get chance, go and see The Thrills. They are a brilliant live act, lovely people and i'm sure will one day become the stars they deserve to be!

The "Süddeutsche Zeitung" took the opportunity and printed one small article on the release of Cummins' book in Germany and two large pictures of Morrissey. The article will probably be no longer made available on the web after today (Sueddeutsche Zeitung, 02/03/2003, p. 14) but it's really nice...

It says that t.a.t.u.'s succes with How soon is now?" is an indicator of how influential The Smiths were, and how the band "struggled for a more beautiful world". Their album covers were noble, and the titles "Strangeways here we come", "Bigmouth Strikes again" and "There is a light that never goes out" have become part of everyday language.

On the book, SZ writes: "Cummins followed the band everywhere, on tour and in the studio, but he never got really close to his boss. How should he? We see Morrissey, the ponderer, the egocentric, the excentric - the narciss, who hated standing in public. A literary figure has no private life.".
