Johnny Marr: 'The Smiths might reform' - NME.com

The guitarist won't rule out reunion

Johnny Marr has said that The Smiths may reform.

Different members of the band have ruled out offers of reuniting over the years, with Morrissey most recently revealing that he turned down a near £40 million offer to tour again.

However, Marr has told BBC Five Live's Victoria Derbyshire that "stranger things have happened so, you know, who knows?"

He added: "It's no biggy. Maybe we will in 10 or 15 years time when we all need to for whatever reasons, but right now Morrissey is doing his thing and I'm doing mine, so that's the answer really."

  • About three years ago, having been disappointed by Quarry, I would have loved to hear these words, but now I think it's a very bad idea. Admittedly Ringleaders was no great shakes, but it WAS an improvement on Curry IMO, and two of the new songs, "All You Need Is Me" and "Goodbye Will Be Farewell", I think are very good indeed. I actually think Morrissey is more interesting as a solo artist these days, for all his post 1995 inconsistency, and I am optimistic that we may see a return to full strength with the next record. Besides, Vauxhall is as good as any Smiths album bar Meat and the Queen, while Arsenal isn't so far off. The reunion is not needed from Morrissey's point of view. But I would like to see Marr supply Moz with a few tunes, because he has a melodic grace that Morrissey's other - often very good - collaborators have failed to match.

  • 10-15 years? Not even next year, let alone then...
Perhaps Morrissey and Marr could get together for a "thing", but never with Joyce and Rourke.

    Get over it.

  • Remember the best friends you had in school or college, when did you last see them? Do you have anything in common with them now? And if someone paid you a vast sum of money to be their constant companion again at the expense of your current friends, could you?
People come and go from your life; your best friend now might be a Christmas card acquaintance in the not too distant future. Still, there's the remotest of possibilities Moz will start pining for bygone days. However, whereas Johnny has flitted between different sets of musicians and not needed any to be 'close', Morrissey counts colleague and friend as the same; he won't dump his band unless they fall out or call time on him.

  • Oh, yes - it's been reported on NME.com so it must be completely true - they never take people's words out of context, as their recent 'exclusive' about Morrissey's retirement proved.

  • After the release of All You Need Is Me, there is no doubt many musicians would give there right arm to work with Morrissey.

It's a shame, what has happened to the others, since those giddy days, but I can recall the events when Morrissey was left to stand alone. And stand alone he did - and, for the last 20 years as well thank god - so, bless them for walking away and remember that money does not charge EVERYONE. Some people still have morals, dignity and integrity. Plus Morrissey now has a band now that are much better than the other Smiths put together and that's the honest truth -go and listen to them yourselves on the US tour !!!!

  • There is no way on this earth that Morrissey will ever reform The Smiths. He does not need to do it. He is the only ex-smith with a solid career even Johnny who is just hopping from one job to the next. Modest Mouse will all end in tears. Viva hate, Vauxhall & Quarry are all as good as anything he did with The Smiths even Ringleaders or dare I say it Southpaw are very good albums. I hope thay never reform, not just because I saw them live about a dozen times but in a decades time they will be up there with Tthe Beatles who we have had been told over and over again by the media are the greatest band ever, not so The Smiths are the most glorious, Godlike band ever with a flawless back catalogue (even Golden Lights)

  • I mean, obviously if they wanted to reunite now, they could and would. They have always, together and seperately, controlled every move of their careers, for detriment or betterment. In 15 years all the ego will be gone, and so of course they'll likely reunite...for the fun of it. Money's not an issue. Right now they're still proving points. Of COURSE they'll get back together. How can you people even debate it. Whether they should or should not isn't even relevant.

  • Pink Floyd recently reunited after 20-something years, and in my opinion it was one of the greatest moments in music I've ever seen. Reuniting a band doesn't mean you have to become best friends with your old bandmates.. it just means you have to realize "hey, we wrote great music together, and we let petty arguments turn into big ones. let's set aside our differences and play some great music again!" I mean, do you really think Morrissey is great friends with his bandmates now?

  • I think it is to a point that simply, why should the Smiths reunite? Our Moz is so much better now. I am married with three kids; why should I reunite with my first love? Don't get me wrong Marr, you are one of the best but in 10-15 years? I think we'd all want to be dead by that time.

I think that's something we could all agree on.
It would be interesting and chances are, it would be pretty good stuff without the whole re-hash thing of The Smiths.
