Because "The Smiths" came out in 1983, The Smiths will first be eligible for the Rock and Hall of Fame 25 years later, in 2008, for the induction ceremony which will follow in March, 2009. According to the unofficial Hall of Fame tracking site, Future Rock Hall, The Smiths are predicted to be the top contenders for induction in their first year of eligibility, at a 69% chance (followed by Run DMC at 61% and Stevie Ray Vaughn at 51%). Morrissey as a solo artist is ranked very well also (for 2013/2014) at 51%.

  • the whole idea of a rock n roll hall of fame is embarassing, I hope to God that if the smiths were nominated morrissey would simply refuse to show up. The place is horrible. Just a way for people to make more money off of lousy bands. Just look at the people on that list and tell me Morrissey or the Smiths should be said in the same breadth of any of those "bands"

  • With his disdain for award ceremonies (and Mike Joyce) I can't really see Morrissey appearing together with the other Smiths to become part of this, which has no relevance on life or music anyway.

I would also hope that Johnny Marr would have nothing to do with this anyway, he's far to cool to join these monsters of the industry.

That leaves the replacable parts, who's to know what they think..

  • "Hand In Glove" and "This Charming Man" were 83 though and the year of the first single is when you become eligible.

  • He is doin' his nut over this act of bullshit! Induct The Smiths this year and allow them to prevail... Nominees can be cast, but nominees can also be bought. Back-handers all the way with scams like this, so why should Swallowneck have to wait two years for what should happen this year???

  • I don't want The Smiths to be inducted, but if they are, I hope Johnny stands up in front of that putrid gallery of ghouls and mummies and reads-- word by word, line by line-- all the thick-headed, snide, condescending reviews of Smiths albums that filled the major U.S. music publications in the 1980s.

At the risk of invoking Def Leppard, what the Hall really needs inside its walls is a little pyromania.

  • How is Willie Nelson NOT in the HOF? Also there are a LOT of those bands that have had a great deal of infuence and ingenuity over the music business. Many on this board take the holier than thou path and criticize U2 but you know what? They are pretty damn good. I would like to see Willie Nelson, The Smiths and a couple of others be inducted. I cannot wait to see the whining when Phish is inducted.

  • yes it's a great honor to be inducted but i don't think morrissey would ever go through with it. i'm sure the others would be appreciative and would attend the ceremony but i can't see moz accepting such an honor. i don't think british acts are even allowed in the rock n' roll hall of fame for that matter.

True friends stab you in the front.
  • I take a different view . During Britpop the Smiths were airbrushed out of muiscal history. In fact they were seen as all that was wrong in bedsitland .I for one feel very pleased that they are now taking their rightful place in musical history . There again I dont know a lot about it .

  • 2013? Too bad the end of time is in late 2012. There won't be a hall of fame in 2013.
