Did anyone see the Tsunami concert from the Millenium Stadium last night? It takes a lot to drag me away from the brilliant music of Moz and The Smiths, but the opening act, Keane, really reached me. I had heard them on the radio previously of course, (who hasn't?) but their performance last night stopped me in my tracks. They sang three numbers, and the last one, "This is the last time" definitely reminded me of The Main Man. The lyrics were intuitive and heartfelt and the delivery was passionate.

I did some research on the net afterwards and came upon an interview with the band, Keane by Alexander Laurence in August 2004.

In answer to the question: "What bands do you think are legitimate influences?" the pianist, Tim Rice-Oxley answered "I remember listening to a lot of The Smiths when I was writing the songs" and went on to add "There are direct influences like The Smiths and even The Chemical Brothers"

No more than I would have expected, but I still get a huge buzz from reading in black and white that the loves of my life live on and are still having a major impact on today's music. "Hopes and Fears" by Keane - definitely one for the collection!

I'm sorry, I totally disagree. Keane, to my mind, are as anodyne and unimaginatively derivative as it is possible to get. They say nothing to me about my life. Other than "Things are not what they used to be". Pop has, truly, madly, deeply, eaten itself.

I cannot begin to comprehend how anyone who admires Morrissey can have any respect whatsoever for Keane. And vice versa no-one who enjoys Keane's brand of MOR, anodyne pap should be interested by the multilayered wonder and genius of Moz.

Morrissey is everything Keane are not: enigmatic, lyrically gifted, iconic, talented, controversial and I could go on. Keane are very measured - a record companies dream - a band to keep the mums and dads happy with perky and generic tunes and lyrics.

Keane's rise over thelast year has been one of the low points of UK music over the past year. The anodyne set have truly taken over, with Keane and other replicas of the Coldplay prototype, Embrace, Athlete set to further dominate in the immediate future.

  • I saw Keane live at a club show in Seattle. And they are great performers and very original. If you listen to their whole album you will see that their lyrical content is legit and substantial. I love them.

  • I adore Morrissey music, and I also really like Keane. Their cd is poignant and enjoyable. Keane is a great little group. Enjoying music other than Morrissey's (or bands he also publically admits adoring) does not make one a dimwitted sod.

I have to say that reading the posts on this board is very sad most of the time...you'd think people who have a deep affinity for the same unique artist would share (generally speaking) similar values and treat one another with kindness, or at least respect one another's differences.

But it's cool that some Morrissey fans like them.

  • theyre tolerable. if im somewhere and Keane comes on ican listen to it and not be aggrivated. idont particularly care for them and id much sooner listen to Travis [who are much better version of the same thing] but theyre not awful.

icant see how anyone could hav that strong of a reaction either way to their music, especially on the hate end of the spectrum. perhaps those living in the UK hav some reason in that Keane hav gotten major airplay over there and that can get nauseating. in NA its not so much or so bad. still, in that case, its the radio stations, etc. whom you should direct your ill-will.

ill never go out of my way to listen to Keane, but iwont go out of my way to avoid them either.

  • More evidence that it is cool and hip to be Smiths fan!

I saw Keane last year on their sell out tour and thought they were an exceptionally dull band and the podgy singers voice grated so much I had to leave before the end (shame really as someone would have probably enjoyed it in my place).

These boys have had some major exposure in the media, television and radio play. Never off the air. I was not in the least bit surprised they kept Quarry off the number one spot. An advert for their album was played during the last episode of Friends (I was watching it with wor lass honest)! How many watched that? 20 million or something? Hardly a level playing field was it?

The world is full of crashing bores.

PS:That sentence will make no sense to people outside of Ireland.

  • I think Keane's music has some of the most beautiful melodies in pop music today. The lyrics are very meaningful and Tom Chaplin's voice is gorgeous.

Ps - Tom is a cutie, chubby face and all.

  • I read an interview with them sometime ago and they started talking about the Libertines. The jist of it was "they claim to be working class but they were all please and thank you.... like nice middle class boys." etc.
    Basically equating
Working class = moronic thickies who smash windows
Middle class = well mannered, educated chaps who play scrabble...
They are either faking their like of Moz to boost their own profile or simply know nothing of his background.
Either way I hope God damns their M.O.R eyes !
