It's been a year since the last time a poll of favorite albums was taken, I just got this reminder with a few possibilities. KenB writes:

I just wanted to comment about some other Brit Pop / English bands that have new CD's:

Echobelly - People Are Expensive
Teenage Fanclub - Howdy
Travis - The Invisible Band
Cranes - Future Songs
Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Live Album
Lush - Ciao! (Best Of)
The Ocean Blue - Davy Jones' Locker
Stereophonics - Just Enough Education To Perform

I wanted to mention them to you because some of these bands (like Moz) don't have major label record deals anymore or they are having problems getting US releases.

Just in case anyone might be interested!!!

  • These would have to be the top five of this year for me!

    1)Counting Crow- This Desert Life
    2)TQ- The Second Coming
    3)The Cult-God and Evil
    4)Dave Matthews Band-Everyday
    5)Deltron-Deltron 3030

Morrissey would have probably been number #1 if he would ever release an album.

  • I still buy lots of back catalogue albums of many artists (apart from Smiths, Morrissey and The Bunnymen - got them all), but the top 3 for me are:
1, Echo And The Bunnymen - Flowers
    2, Doves - Lost Souls
    3, REM - Reveal

I also got Can Our Love by the Tindersticks and i don't like it one bit, so if anyone is offended by that, but it's not to my liking.

  • although i have "people are expensive" (as well as the two singles, "tell me why" and "digit ep") i wasn't really that impressed with this album, as i have been in the past with the three previous echobelly albums.

incidentally, don't you think that the song, "sleeping hitler" (b-side off of "bellyache ep") sounds a kind of like "the harsh truth of the camera eye"?

sonya sings (1993): "but it's much too late to be judge. oh how i wish i was blindly, i wish i was blindly, blindly loved."
morrissey sings (1991): "i don't want to be judged anymore, i don't want to be judged. i would sooner be loved. i would sooner be just blindly loved."

some cds i have bought and liked this year:

Momus - "Folktronic" (well "folk me amadeus" is just grooving.)

Deltron 3030 (i saw them on tour and didn't get this until recently, but i've really enjoyed it, unlike the kid koala album or the automator's a better tomorrow cd. they're all OK album, but deltron is the best so far, better than gorillaz!)

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (friendly rock band)

Lucksmiths - "Happy Secret" (i don't have their latest cd, but at the moment, i'm content with this one and "a good kind of nervous")

Belle & Sebastian - "...Sings Jonathan David" (okay okay this song just rocks. the more i listen to this, the better it gets. oh their last album was pretty good too, everyone seems to agree.)

Weezer - Weezer/green album (everyone loves them, no need to explain.)

    Idlewild - 100 Broken Windows
Gentle Waves - Swansong for You
Lush - Ciao ('spooky' is still the best ;)
    Grandaddies - The Sophtware Slump

i'm sure there are a lot more i've forgot, but these are the ones that comes to my mind right now.

Don't rake up my mistakes, I know exactly what they are!
  • Relationship of Command by At The Drive-In is one of the most exciting, original new albums I've heard in years...

Exciter by Depeche Mode got a lot of unenthusiastic reviews, but is actually a very fine record...and Dave sounds better than ever...

All That You Can't Leave Behind by U2 has some really good tracks, though I still can't help feeling disappointed with it - something of an artistic retreat after their 1990s experimentation...

Renegades by RATM, also some terrific moments, but not as good as the stuff they wrote themselves...

Parachutes by Coldplay, overplayed on radio, but pretty good (if falling short of excellence)...

As for BDB, Radiohead, Nelly Furtado...liked most of the stuff I've heard from them, but haven't actually heard the whole albums yet. Must investigate. And the Best of Blur's good, if compilations count. Eagerly awaiting the next neworder record.

  • number one is, though it has been released for a little longer than one year:
    einstürzende neubauten- silence is sexy
you should really listen to that one, if you're really open towards truly beautiful music. it's weigh less noisy than one might expect (though every bit of noise has allways been perfectly jusified by en) and it leads you into a whole universe of emotions and impressions and bits of thoughts circling around the vacant new buildings at the potzdamer platz in berlin.
2.) nick cave and the bad sees- no more shall we part
    3.)placebo- black market music

    i'll get

    rem-reveal
    air-10000 hz legend
    radiohead- amnesiac

for my upcoming birthday, so i don't have an opinion about them yet.

  • a question for all the people who have posted coldplay's parachutes.i like that album, really, but yesterday, listening carefully,i've found a gruesome similarity between our love's "hold on to your friends" and coldplay "shiver"(also a bit of "everything is not lost)maybe my ears are so used to listen Moz that now..so,what's your opinion?do u agree with me?

  • I am a veteran morrissey fan but have recently got onto the net and have discovered albums and singles that i had never known to exist because of the american label thing and lack of exposure in britain. I have got the internet and im back into the swing of things. I feel sorry for the people who have listened many times to the songs as they are fresh to me. I love him again. Maladjusted, southpaw grammar, oye esteban dvd, rare tracks, all new to me and FABULOUS.

    I love you all.
