A DOZEN protesters at the park carried signs reading, “No bear slaughter in my state” and “Act now, Governor. Protect citizens and wildlife.”

The six-day hunt was authorized to thin New Jersey’s swelling black bear population, estimated by state wildlife officials to be as high as 3,200.

The state opened up 1 million acres in northern New Jersey to hunters and issued just over 5,200 bear permits.

ALTERNATIVE TO HUNTING?

Wearing a bear mask, Janice Wrubel of Nutley said the state has not aggressively pursued alternatives to the hunt, including sterilization.

About 200 animal advocates, some armed with video recorders, went into the woods to make sure hunters stayed clear of dens and other areas where hunting was forbidden, said Lynda Smith, director of the Bear Education and Resource Group, which has tried to teach residents how to live with bears.

“I fought against this day for 10 years,” Smith said. “One week of bear hunting, nothing’s going to be solved. Come spring the bears will still be eating our garbage and still be walking through our back yards.”

JUDGE STEPS IN

On Friday, a federal judge put a crimp the state’s plans, temporarily closing the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area to hunters. The federal land constitutes up to 25 percent of the area designated for the hunt, according to a lawyer representing New Jersey’s Fish and Game Council.
U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said he would decide Tuesday whether to extend the restraining order through the six-day hunt.

The storm that left more than a foot of snow in the area could also drive bears into their dens, where they will be off limits.

“With a heavy snow like this, they may not even come out,” said Joe Sampogna, who has hunted since 1975. “They may just stay in their dens.”

Shoot the bears

The anti-hunters can't have it both ways. Either some bears get shot and utilized by hunters or the population continues to swell at the same time habitat shrinks. Then the bears just get hit by cars while trying to find a place to live, or they get shot while scavenging for food in the same neighborhoods these anti's live, or they die of diseases like distemper.

Its nice to have a bleeding heart unless its bleeding from a bear that attacks to protect its cub in your backyard.

The anti's should sell their habitat-eating home and property and donate the money to habitat restoration. They should then move into earhern holes and live like the bears they pretend to care about.

When these houses were built didn't they know bears where known to inhabit the area? Previous administrations were doing research on how to control the population which included sterilization and relocating bears. When McGreevey got into office he dropped everything and bowed down to the homeowners and the hunters. If you live in Hunterdon, Sussex, or any other the other North West counties where black bears are known to live you have to expect it and take steps to prevent a bear going into your garbage. A barking dog will keep them away. Black bears are mostly harmless and are opportunists perferring to eat vegetation, bugs, grubs ect. Who is going to monitor the 5000+ hunters out to kill the 3000 bears and make sure they don't go into dens because most of these bears are in hybernation right now. Can't be protesters because if caught they will be arrested/and or fined. I swim in the Atlantic Ocean almost everyday in the summer and I have seen sharks out there but I take precautions and when I do see one I don't call fish and game demanding every shark be killed.

NEW YORK -- David Wells appears close to signing back with the New York Yankees, as the two sides are hammering out a one-year contract for the 2004 season.
The deal would be a minor league contract with a base salary of roughly $3 million, though incentives could boost the value to about $7 million. Gregg Clifton, who represents Wells, said that the structure of the deal is similar to the contract that Wells had with the Yankees in 2002-03.

Wells, 40, went 34-14 in his last two seasons, but the left-hander underwent back surgery last week to repair a herniated disc. It was the second back surgery for Wells in 30 months.

"We're pretty close," said Clifton, who believes the deal could be done before the Winter Meetings. "It's a deal that's fair to them and fair to David."

The Yankees declined to exercise a $6 million option on Wells for 2004, choosing to wait until he had surgery to monitor his status. Sunday, the team offered the left-hander arbitration, extending the negotiating window between the two sides.

Wells had a follow-up visit with his surgeon in New York on Monday, and Clifton said that the doctor was pleased with his status.
"He's way ahead of schedule already," Clifton said. "He's doing things after one week that they didn't think he'd be doing for three weeks."

According to Clifton, five or six teams have contacted him about the possibility of signing Wells, who is currently rehabbing in New York. Wells will return to Tampa next week to continue his recovery.

Wells should be ready to begin Spring Training, and doctors have said that he will be at 100 percent strength by March 1.

Wells compiled a 15-7 record with a 4.14 ERA last season, though he was just 4-4 after the All-Star break. Wells won each of his starts in the Division Series and ALCS, but he dropped Game 1 of the World Series while pitching on three days' rest. He started Game 5 of the Fall Classic, only to leave after one inning with back spasms.

Talk to Brian Cashman

Excellent news. Anyone who can drink all night and pitch a no hitter the next day hungover is ok with me.
Looks like the Sheff deal is off. He shakes hands on a 3 year 39 mil deal and he goes back a day later asking for 42 mil. Not a smart move with Vlad on the market.

Power Rankings as of DEC 9
1 Toronto Maple Leafs 5
Their best run in a decade isn't the result of smoke or mirrors. Toronto has outscored opponents 32-14 during its eight-game winning streak.
2 Philadelphia Flyers 1
They bounced back nicely from a shoddy effort in Ottawa, and they're still the toughest team in the league at home.
3 Colorado Avalanche 3
There are several reasons Colorado is back in familiar territory atop the NW Division, but one that stands out is their 13-4-2-1 record so far against Western Conference opponents.
4 New Jersey Devils 2
They broke out of their doldrums by allowing only nine shots in a shutout of Washington and then rekindled memories of last spring by stealing a victory in Ottawa.
5 St. Louis Blues 8
The penalty killing has been outstanding of late, which helps explain why the Blues have allowed the fewest goals of any team in the West.
6 Detroit Red Wings 4
The rich get richer. 40-year-old free agent Steve Thomas couldn't find a job until Detroit signed him in mid-November, but he's scored six goals and 10 points in 10 games and is a plus-8.
7 Vancouver Canucks 6
It's far too early to have hit a wall, but after an excellent start, Vancouver has managed just one regulation victory in its past 12 games.
8 Los Angeles Kings 10
Andy Murray deserves coach of the year consideration for what he has done with a team that has had as much talent on the injury list this season as on the active roster.
9 Calgary Flames 18
The Flames are learning that good defense leads to success in the NHL. Calgary has allowed the fewest shots in the league and hasn't lost in regulation its past 10 games.
10 San Jose Sharks 13
Seeing the Sharks above Dallas and Anaheim in the Pacific Division standings wouldn't have surprised anyone -- last year. But backup Vesa Toskala has been great in place of injured Evgeni Nabokov and San Jose has become very tough at home.
11 Boston Bruins 7
They rebounded well against the Flyers after being humiliated by Toronto, but memories of last year's collapse around this time continue to linger.
12 Nashville Predators 12
This hard-working team is surprising a lot of people and starting to believe in itself.
13 Tampa Bay Lightning 9
The cold air of the Empire State provided a much-needed wakeup call for a team that seemed to be falling asleep at the switch.
14 Atlanta Thrashers 11
Marc Savard has picked up where he left off since returning from ankle surgery, scoring six goals and nine points in seven games.
15 Ottawa Senators 17
Backup Martin Prusek has done such a good job replacing flu-ridden Patrick Lalime, he might have created a goaltender controversy.
16 Montreal Canadiens 23
Coach Claude Julien raised some eyebrows by benching the team's top scorer, Mike Ribeiro, but he obviously made an impact on a team that has gone a season-high five games without a loss.
17 New York Rangers 14
They keep finding ways to lose games they should win. The Rangers have now lost three times and tied once in 13 games they led going into the third period.
18 Phoenix Coyotes 24
Shane Doan has been hot lately with three goals and six assists in his past six games, but Phoenix could use more from Daymond Langkow, who hasn't scored in nine games.
19 Buffalo Sabres 20
The Sabres need to get Miroslav Satan going, but you have to wonder if dropping him to the fourth line will help. Satan has been pointless in 14 of his past 15 games.
20 Anaheim Mighty Ducks 16
Jean-Sebastien Giguere continues to baffle everyone with his inconsistent and often weak play. Last year's Conn Smythe Trophy winner has a 2.91 goals-against average, lower than 24 other goalies who have played at least a dozen games.
21 Edmonton Oilers 19
Goaltender Ty Conklin, who was very hot only a couple of weeks, still hasn't thawed out since the Heritage Classic. He has gone 1-5-1 since then, allowing 24 goals on 198 shots, an .878 save percentage.
22 Minnesota Wild 25
At least they know how to make the most out of a minimalist approach to things. The Wild scored only one goal in each of their four games last week but came away with a victory and two ties.
23 Dallas Stars 15
The last-place Dallas Stars. Say it again. The last-place Dallas Stars. It's an apt description of a team that played four division opponents last week and lost all four, getting outscored 11-2.
24 Florida Panthers 22
The atmosphere is a lot better since Rick Dudley replaced Mike Keenan as coach, but the results are not.
25 Columbus Blue Jackets 27
Hard to say what makes them a better attraction on the road: Having super soph Rick Nash in the lineup, or their 0-9-1-1 travel record that almost guarantees a happy time for fans in the buildings they visit?
26 Carolina Hurricanes 26
So much for votes of confidence. The team brass promised no shakeups after a mediocre November, but the 'Canes responded with only three goals and two points (neither via a victory) to start December.
27 New York Islanders 21
If only they played the Blackhawks more than once a year.
28 Washington Capitals 28
It didn't take long for them to get back to reality after posting their first two-game winning streak of the year. Of course they beat the Islanders to get it, so should it really count?
29 Pittsburgh Penguins 29
Sebastien Caron should see a lot more action in goal now that Marc-Andre Fleury has been loaned to Canada's junior team. Our condolences to him.
30 Chicago Blackhawks 30
Look at the bright side. The last time Chicago had a winless slide this long was 1959-60, and they won the Stanley Cup the following season. There probably won't be a season next year, you say? OK, then maybe there isn't a bright side.
