Did Mike & Andy Write Their Parts?

Did they collaborate with Johnny on the basslines & drum parts (in which case, why were they not given songwriting credits)?

or

Did Johnny write the basslines & drum parts & simply bring the boys in when it was time to do the proper studio recordings?

Andy wrote his own bass lines. Also he played cello on some tracks.

right... "Shakespeare's Sister"... any others?

Here's why they don't get credit

Here's why they were not given songwriting credits, even though they wrote their own parts. When it comes to what makes a song a song, it's the lyrics, the melody, and the chord structure. Imagine Johnny Marr playing an acoustic guitar, stripping a song down to it's simplest arrangement, just strumming the basic chords, and Moz next to him singing along, and that's what is given credit for "songwriting". All the other stuff, like the bass lines, drum parts, and even Johnny's intricate guitar lines, fall more into the realm of arrangement rather than songwriting. This doesn't mean someone can copy the intricacies of their music, and it doesn't mean Andy and Mike weren't absolutely essential to what the Smiths were. But that is why they don't get songwriting credit.

I think bands should use this system for copyright and credit, but
the money should be divided equally. For example, the singer, songwriter, bassist, and drummer all get equal pay for live concerts and recorded material. However, if Witney Houston wants to remake the song for the bodyguard part II, then the royalities must go only to the songwriter and singer. Also, when a bassist or drummer leaves a band, they leave the money too..

Yes, that's how it's supposed to be

You've hit it right on the head. The problems happen when band members think they're not getting paid equally for the peformances, etc. Who knows when that person is justly owed money or whether he is just broke and figures litigation is an easy way to get some money. For example, one of the members of the Replacements sued them because he said he never saw any money from performing. The rest of the band all testified to this effect; "Of course not, we spent it all on drugs and booze, you included, you nitwit! There is no money left!"

What song what Whitney do? Panic? :)

Every situation is different. I think people should get their fair share, what they earn, or what they agree to beforehand. Which doesn't always mean equality.
