Can't take any credit for this, Mrs F spotted it while reading Elaine Dundy's 1964 book The Old Man And Me...

What's the reference?

Frankly, Mr Shankly, this position I've held
it pays my way and it corrodes my soul
oh, I didn't realise that you wrote poetry
(I didn't realise you wrote such bloody awful poetry)

A line of Uncleskinny's text reads: "And this too added to my annoynace, this corroding of my soul for his enjoyment, for after awhile I couldn't stop it, did it automaticaly like a reflex."

There is a Victoria Wood song called Funny How Things Turn Out with a line that says "...singer Lerner and Leowe to the mentally ill" which seems to have been bastardized in Shankly.
