OK, I finally downloading the 4 new songs!

On first listen, and with no idea how they'll sound on an actual album, I'd have to say "I Like You" is my fave! I like the way it uses such an ordinary phrase. And "The First of the Gang to Die"! That's a catchy-ass one!
Those could be very nice singles. "The World Is Full of Crashing Bores" is pretty good, I love the lyrics the most on this one of the 4, but somehow I don't think this MP3 did it justice. "Mexico" I'm kinda iffy about. Lyrically it's the weakest. But maybe it'll grow on me, we'll see.

Looked at that Morrissey interview on the news page. Um...why does he say he doesn't like any American bands while at the very same time he plays Apex Theory at his concerts???? OK, I know, he's just being Morrissey. But I continue to fail to understand why he dismisses all rap music. Last night
I bought Sage Francis "Personal Journals" and it's pretty f***ing good!! You all should check it out.
Hey it even has a lyric on "Different" saying: "I'm a real vegetarian: No chicken...not even fish," so there ya go.

I also got Super Furry Animals "Rings Around the World," on recommendation from Boz Boorer's tour diary. I'm fairly impressed by it so far, it's definitely one for those into the Britpop thing because these guys have mastered it, although the sticker on the front saying it was MOJO's "Album of the Year" is a bit of an overrating. Well, it does have that sound music journalists go ape shit for. YEah, it's a good, pleasant album. But the singer reminds me too much of Blur.

GAWD! Have you listened to any of that crap?

Morrissey is too smart to fall for any of that dumb stuff! Are you?
rap is all CRAP

It's ignorant to dismiss an entire genre. Morrissey has a closed mind about lot of music.

OMG and you said about generalising about genres!! Super Furries 'Britpop'. Are you for real??? I'm sorry, maybe in the US then anything guitar-based from Britain is called 'Britpop' but it's a much more specific genre here, and Super Furries are certainly NOT it! They are exciting and fairly innovative, unless the preening nasty Southerners of Britpop. And........ god I can hardly type for rage..... Gruff sounds like Damon 'i'm the very definition of twat' Albarn - are you sure??? It's like saying Moz sounds like Robbie Williams. Wash your ears out - bloody hell! Just ONE reason (of the many) - Albarn sings in weedy pathetic Mockney accent, Gruff is WELSH.

Americans eh??

I don't know...I just got it last night and only had a quick listen, OK. Chill. Because I have this super deep Sage Francis album to digest at the same time. I like britpop. I'm sorry if I got that wrong, or if I offended the Welsh in some way. It's a good album, better than most I've heard lately. Especially "It's Not The End of the World" and that "A Touch Sensitive". Some of it does remind me of Blur, I'm sorry!! Not all of his singing, and not on every track, just in moments, some of the music too. I'm surprised you don't hear that. In fact I have "Receptacle for the Respectable" on and he does have a Damon thing going on here for sure. How can you not hear it?? You're in denial. They also have that forced effort to out-clever everyone that is typical of British bands, which can be good or bad - here it's mostly good, but sometimes bad.

Re: GAWD! Have you listened to any of that crap?

Just because you don't like any music from a particular genre doesn't mean you're ignorant. It's a matter of taste. If you refuse to listen to it in the first place, that's closed minded. You can't help it if you don't like any of it.

Anyone can find *something* in any genre they'd like if they give it a fair chance. It's fine if he doesn't, but he's despairing about the state of contemporary music while at the same time completely closing his ears to one of the genres that has the most life in it, with thousands of underground hip hop acts around the world feeding it. I'm not saying rap isn't a bit stale these days, but it's less stale than a lot of other shit.

and you know why?

because he don't give a f*** about anybody else you know that he don't give a f*** about anybody else you know that he don't give a f*** about anybody else you know that he don't give a f*** about anybody else.

Re: I've seen the light, and it's not rap

Rap is crude, profane, misogynistic, violent, irrevelent to 90% of the population (it says nothing to me about my life), embarassing, tuneless, and if you have really looked at any of the videos- it's pornographic!

> Morrissey has a closed mind
> about lot of music.

He's no idiot! He knows what "real music" is, and he know rap is not real music. I have the right to ignore rap, and so does he. No one should be "forced" to experience something that is so distasteful to them.

rap

i've always had a love/hate thing with rap. in the early nineties, i was really into LPs like Public Enemy's "It Takes A Nation Of Millions" & "Fear Of A Black Planet", and De La Soul's ""3 Feet High" albums, and they still hold up for me now. i think they're pretty timeless records, much like The Smiths' stuff.

as far as contemporary rap goes, i think from a sound and production standpoint, alot of it is really really great. infectious rhythms and tunes, maybe not as brilliant as Johnny Marr, but in it's own way very good still. the two biggest problems that i have with contemporary mainstream rap is the inane, cliche ridden and overall pathetic content of the lyrics, and the cheesy, self indulgent promotional style of the genre, with the endless stream of videos of people partying on the beach with champagne.

i would love for someone to educate me regading some contemporary rap groups who actually have artistic lyrics, and aren't part of the campy MTV marketing machine. i'm open to it.

Suzanne: this is not like you! I thought you were a laaaady!

My "lately in the car and at home" music:

The Strokes "Is This It?" (great songwriting)
The Hives "Veni Vidi Vicious" (excellent 21st century punk)
Moby "18" (best so far except "We Are All Made Of Stars")
AIR "Moon Safari" (for meditation)
XTC "Drums And Wires" (a classic)
Moby "Little Idiot/"Animal Rights" (interesting to see how far he's come)
The Selecter "f*** the UK" (bootleg, another classic)
The Clash "Super Black Market Clash" (extra tracks)
The Replacements "Last Concert Ever" (1991 bootleg and a kick-ass performance)
Simon and Garfunkel "Live in Central Park 1967" (for loss of innocence)
Paul Westerberg "Stereo/Mono" (he can still churn 'em out!)
The Beatles "Anthology 2" (lotsa outtakes and strangeness)
David Bowie "Heathen" (highly overrated)
David Bowie "Outside" (highly underrated)
Berlin "Pleasure Victim" (especially the title song "oh! oh! Oh!)
Peter Murphy "Dust" (not that great, unless you like Turkish music)
AND Moz "I'm A Poet",the American version boot w/Suede's "My Insatiable One"

so behave Suzanne and how's your website darling?

OK, my music mix....I'm actually thinking of purchasing a CD manufactured in this year! We'll update this story as information is provided to us.

so right now, i think its close to what i was listening to last year with the Topsy Turvy soundtrack and the occasional Clinic thrown in.

I did have a dream last night that NME was reporting the release of a new Moz single. It was very real to the point of confusion when i woke up this morning, not knowing if i had read their website or not.

> so behave Suzanne and how's your website darling?

err, my website....i didn't realize that i still had one...

Last night I browsed the CDs at Borders. At Borders they are bribed by reocrd companies to place certain CDs amongst the row of headophones to listen to a sample. Next to each one is a sign describing the album. They used the word "brit-pop." So obviously that's how their own record company has labeled them. So there.

Yes I've been confused for a week about what this "true" definition of "brit-pop" is. = )
