MORRISSEY - 'FIRST OF THE GANG TO DIE'
In which the year's other big pop comeback (after the Pixies) temporarily forgets he's from Manchester, England, and reinvents himself as a former member of a hispanic gang with a chap called Hector, who is sadly no longer with us. Ever the sympathetic narrator, Moz spins his yarn with heartfelt sympathy for the high-flying Hector, and conjures the necessary mixture of respect and regret in equal measure. People rarely write songs like this any more, so even if this didn't have a killer melody and high sense of drama, we'd be willing it to succeed, but as it turns out, we don't have to after all. Phew!
