It's because when started listening to college radio the shows that played The Smiths also played the those groups as well. Yeah they sound different but to someone hearing all these bands for the 1st time it was exciting.

In the UK, the holy grail was John Peel. We had other radio shows, and The Smiths in particular had mainstream exposure. But with Peel you had no excuse for lumping stuff together, the range was far too extreme (you could always rely on him to play an 8 minute Reggae song half an hour in, ideal for a brew break!). He did play some real stinkers though, but as your favourite uncle, you forgave him.
