All you need is not love, apparently, but Morrissey, who sways with a tambourine in the music video for his latest single, "All You Need Is Me," hitting #24 on UK charts this week. "You hiss and moan," he croons, "and you constantly groan. And you don't ever go away."
Whether this is knowing self-reference or an accidentally applicable observation, we will never know. But he of the sick heart and healthy jaw, recently on the UK charts at #1 and #2 with 2006's Ringleader Of The Tormentors and 2004's You Are The Quarry, respectively, announced last week a new offering: Years Of Refusal, due September of this year on Polydor Records.
All this comes on the heels of several other juicy plot points in the saga of Morrissey. In February, Decca/Polydor released Greatest Hits, a collection collated from Morrissey's 20-year career of Top-10 and Top-20 hits. Its fitting first single, "That's How People Grow Up," debuted in the UK at #14. And this April, recent antagonism between the singer and NME boiled over, as Morrissey threw his money and support behind the Love Music Hate Racism festival under somewhat bizarre circumstance.
Yes, Morrissey's been busy, and it's not going to stop. On July 4, he will headline the main stage at the O2 Wireless Festival in London's Hyde Park, playing with Beck and Guillemots, amongst others. That same month, Sony-BMC will issue a remastered Southpaw Grammar, first released back in 1995. This version will include three previously unreleased tracks, as well as new artwork, which raises the question: was there there something wrong with the old?
