The Smiths, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Nirvana and more feature in a new book, recounting the story of ‘post-punk popzine’ Ablaze! Scene spoke to Karren Ablaze! from her new base in Spain.

Excerpt:

Tell us about your letter from Morrissey...

Growing up in Manchester in the 1980s, it seemed obvious that I should write about The Smiths, who turned out to be the defining band of that decade. I made a couple of attempts to secure an interview with them… this letter was the result. It seemed that my brattish request for an audience triggered a fount of self-pity and rage in dear Morrissey, and it was greatly puzzling to receive that scrawly missive from him as I was setting out for school one morning. The letter stayed under wraps for almost 30 years; now it’s nice to be able to share it at last.
