Anyone else bought this? It's genius - definately their best album to date. The production is lush and gorgeous, and Martin's velvet-smooth voice gets more soulful with each successive album. In all honesty I think this album leaves The Smiths comparisons far behind. Gene have progressed into a very soulful, decidedly *non*-indie band. There are bits of "Libertine" which sound like they could fit on a Style Council album.

On an aside, and to make a comparison with Moz, i was heartened that when Gene and Polydor parted company, they didn't just sit around bleating about not having a deal. They dusted themselves off, orgainsed some gigs, formed their own label and released an excellent live album, then went straight back into the studio with "name" producers (Hugh Jones & Stephen Street) and recorded a new album.

I guess it's worth pointing out that, as a band, gene wouldn't be worth a fraction of waht Morrissey is currently worth. One wonders why he couldn't do something like this. Apathy maybe? No new songs. I know he *says* he has an album's worth of material, but remember, he didn't play any new songs during the "Oye Esteban" tour. You would think if he had new material he would have given a few news songs an airing on the concert tour.

what more can I add? every word is absolutely true!
