End of year polls.

For those who remember when Melody Maker and the NME were good (they once were) the end of year issue was very sought after. A chance to compare your list of best album, single etc with those writers from the paper. I would actually write a blacklist of those jurno's from Melody Maker who I hated and those I loved - Simon Price, Chris Roberts, Andrew Muller, simply because their lists nearly mirrored mine. Any one else want to share.

Album of the year. Ivy "Long Distance". Nothing comes close to equalling this. A sensual smooth album which like a mermaids siren draws me in for me to loose myself for ages listening to it. The whole album plays like a novel where you can't just listen to one track but the whole album. Ivy have become the most precious and beautiful thing in a increasing brutal world. Lovely lovely smooth pop with the best female singer around who doesn't sound like another artist. My best friend on ferry journeys and long haul flights.

Singles of the year. Beaumont "Disco la tech Belle and Sebastian " Waking up to Us" Tompaulin "My Life at the Movies" Bands which make me still believe that pop music isn't dead. Remember if it can't be said in 3 mintues 15 it's to long.

Movie of the year. "Marlana" A little Italian arthouse film I saw. Set in World War Two the story of a 13 year old boy with a crush on a older woman. Shades of "the summer of 1942". Fill of brillant blue skies, old cobble stone streets, a beautiful actress and wonderful acting. What more could you want.

Words of the year. Morrissey's Q magazine questionaire results. After all these years I realise that's why I like the man so much.

TV programme of the year. Tv's shite no matter where you live.

Object of desire for the year. Nigella Lawson, Morrissey, the girl in Borders who does that really cool thing with her hair, Louise Brooks, the Corrs, oh and a real person who I'm not telling you who she is.

Event of the year. Doesn't take a lot to work out does it? September 11.

Bastard of the year. Mmmm don't know whether it should be George W or Bin Laden. Bartez as well, couldn't catch a cold that fella.

People of the year. Ruffian and Grim for their kindness while on me holidays.

Most sadly missed. The Smiths, Richey Manic, Andrea and Kylie J

Gig of the year. The Smiths night, LoF's bedroom July 28. The after gig party was a riot. Oh the things you do after to many warm lagers!

Bore of the year. Greasetea, Mr Proper, Mr Pooper ad nauseam. Same old lame jokes and insults. At least Fozzie bear could wiggle his ears.

Most enigmatic person on this board. Tingle.

My hope/wish of the new year. If I tell you it won't come true.

> Album of the year.
"A Different Lifetime" by Spearmint. I've only had this for a month (thanks for turning me onto them Ruffian!) but I've become obsessed with it. Worth the price for "Scottish Pop" alone.

> Singles of the year.
"Jonathan David" and "I'm Waking Up To Us" by Belle & Sebastian, "Julie Christie!" by Spearmint and "Alan Bean" by Hefner.

> Reissue of the year (I added this one, LoF)
"Crystal Days" - the Echo & The Bunnymen boxed set, "Slum Clearance" by The Siddeleys, and a crisply remastered "Electric Warrior" by T-Rex - something no Morrissey fan should be without.

> Movie of the year.
"Momento" (I know, this came out last year in most places) - one of the cleverst films I've ever seen, and "Rain", *the* most beautifully filmed movie ever made.

> Words of the year.
Anything that appeared on Michael Moore's website (www.michaelmoore.com) in the aftermath of September 11th. The man is an American treasure. And The Onion (www.theonion.com) for my Wednesday afternoon fix.

> TV programme of the year.
"Nigella Bites", The Simpsons (always), and the 10 DVD boxed set of "The Prisoner" I bought in Hawaii. Best TV show ever ....

> Object of desire for the year.
My new wife, Vanessa. (One month anniversary yesterday)
Kirsten Dunst in "The Virgin Suicides" and "Crazy/Beautiful",
Nigella Lawson, always ......

> Event of the year.
September 11th, obviously. Plus getting married last month.

> Bastard of the year.
Osama bin Laden, and the people who helped create him. (You know who you are ...)

> People of the year.
Stuart Murdoch, always. LoF (good meeting a fellow poster in the same city), Jonathan Brunette and Scott Plasticene ... may you go far.

> Most sadly missed.
My grandparents, who both died this year., and who consequently missed my wedding. Kirsty MacColl, Sir Peter Blake.

> Gig of the year.
The Brunettes and Plasticene, Leigh Sawmill Cafe. The night it rained so hard, good food, nice atmosphere, Auckland's two best bands, and then nice to a great bed'n'breakfast, with brioche for breakfast the next morning. A perfect weekend.

Neil Finn and Friends at the St. James. Hearing Neil and Johnny Marr play "There is a light ..." was breathtaking.

> Bore of the year.
There's enough of them here ..... anyone with nothing to contribte, and just bitterness, vitriol and misdirected teen-angst. If you're going to act like that, go buy a Marilyn Manson album and feck off ....

> My hope/wish of the new year.
Nothing that won't sound cliched. And maybe Smiths boxed-set in 2002.

I think its funny that you "vomit' to people like linkin park and others. Those guys are making huge B$nk right now,I'd like to have all that cash and "S.uck". Sign me up. Anyone would like to have the success they've had right now. Your the type of person who'd say something like than. broke as a joke and talking trash about a few millionaires? and you say I'm a moron? They are what they are to their fans, just like morrissey is to his and so on. If people buy their cd's,that must mean they like that kind of music, same with morrissey and other bands. You don't sell 3 million + records and "suck",no you are one thing: RICH!!! and you don't give a schit about what others say. While your laughing at them, they in turn, are laughing all the way to the bank. Remember that!!!!
