From Mark Deveney:

From today's Guardian (Mar. 31):
'Life of grime' by Garry Mulholland

This is a small section from an article promoting Black Box Recorder's new CD The Facts Of Life.

BBR's singer is Luke Haines formerly from the Auteurs.

"The two most common comparisons BBR get are to grumpy England-obsessed has-been (!) Morrissey and legendary French maestro Serge Gainsbourg. Discuss.
Luke: "Ha!!! Morrissey? I saw him recently, and he was dreadful. But I quite like the new Fat Morrissey look".

Very cheeky me thinks.

Luke Haines is one of the best songwriters in the world today. The Auteurs are brilliant, Black Box Recorder are brilliant (even if that singer's voice gets under my skin), and the Baader Meinhof project was brilliant. It is a shame he is an idiot at times. He is always going on about how he doesn't wish to do the typical Britpop star role, but he never misses an opportunity to do the typical Britpop star thing and slag off someone he doesn't like. It's a pity, because given the general crapness of the British music scene, he ought to simply let his wonderful music speak for itself. Picking on Moz is a cheap shot. He should be honored to be mentioned with the greats.

PS. To correct what has been put in the initial announcement, Luke is not the lead singer in BBR... he co-writes the songs with John Moore. Vocals are sung by Sarah Nixey.

luke's mum, i completely agree with your assessment. the auteurs are dead, dead brilliant, i absolutely love luke's songwriting. he's admitted in previous interviews that he was greatly influenced by the smiths. and you can hear that influence (along with others, like bob dylan most obviously) in his work. sometimes though, luke does tend to slag off people in knee-jerk fashion, as though by instinct. you may think im insane, but im not always convinced that luke is telling the truth. if there was ever a man in the entire universe of pop who would conceal his "guilty pleasures", its mr. luke haines. you may think this delusional thinking, but i think he still likes morrissey- after all, he went to the show, though he's been gently (comparatively speaking) slagging off morrissey for years. so why does he still go to the concerts? no, when luke's bile has truly been invoked, his words are more plentiful and incisive than "it was dreadful". nah, luke was on auto-pilot slag in that interview; i guarantee he enjoyed that show more than he lets in on.

I agree 110% with Mr. Johnny Bravo. Luke Haines showed up for a Morrissey show because he does admire and respect him despite being on "auto-slag" there is no question about it. The Auteurs and Black Box Recorder have recorded some dark and disturbingly brilliant songs and I think he understands that The Smiths have kicked down some doors that he himself has wondered through. Bye the way, don't you think he was just following Morrisseys lead by making such a statement? Morrissey has made some tongue in cheak comments many times during interviews which makes the interviews all the more readable and entertaining.

England obsessed has been? I'm a little curious about how one considers a person obsessed with their homeland? Is it because they mentioned being what they are or what street they were raised on? I guess Jarvis Cocker,Brett Anderson, Jonh Lennon and so on are/were all obsessed with England as well. Does a has been sell out concert tours with no current album release? Why are idiots allowed to speak with the general public?
Many questions I have........

I think the ass-hole should make himself clear that he likes Morrissey, because to me it sounds like he's making fun of him, plus if he's so brilliant how come I've never heard of him and his band. Apperantly he's not that brilliant. He's problably the one who's fat, he's a regular fat basterd thats what he is. I hope he ends up in a m3 pile-up. Moz would crush him like a gnat if he saw Moz face to face.

Luke Haines has just lost any respect I ever had for him. Why does Morrissey get so little respect in the uk? Seeing the live video from the Mexico City concert made me almost cry with shame; Morrissey should be treated with that sort of adulation here, in Britain.
It would seem that the supposedly 'popular' music press here assess people's talent on whether they are fashionable, rather on whether they are any good at what they do. Even Q magazine has been having a go. Shame Shame Shame....

I bought some Auteurs singles a long long time ago and they were so bad I had to get rid of them. So I don't know what you people are talking about.

luke haines is cynical, acerbic, and down right acidic . he is also the worlds greatest living songwriter . i imagine luke was just being his more miserable than morrissey self . as for those of you who would condemn him without knowing a thing about him . . . oh,lord where do i start ?

The only obvious fact from reading the comments is that some Morrissey fans like moz solely for the music. And most likely consider the beat the most important factor in music. A certain "bob" character spouted about a subject of which he is blatantly ignorant. The man is impervious to such delicacies as wit and intellectual stimulation. It must be like talking to fan of will smith's- no thought process. If you haven't gotten a reply to the letter you wrote morrissey, realize he and anyone who's scored above the moron level on SATS isn't on your side.

Leave Mr Haines alone. He's having a laugh. It must be hard being a nobody so please give him a break. Moz has had a lot worse thrown at him. Haines is perfectly within his rights not to be a Moz fan anymore but to slag off one of the recent live shows is just laughable. They all have been so full of energy. I hope he paid for his ticket, then he will be truly choked. 18 quid must be hard for him to come by these days.

That's a harsh, but perfectly fair assessment Michael.
And some of the other people, I wouldn't exactly term Luke a "great song-writer"...more like "a generally poor songwriter who tries to sound like the Fall but occassionally writes something passable"
