"Moon River"--Frank Sinatra? Is this a joke? Old Blue Balls could never write something so beautiful, although it is possible that he performed it once or twice. If that's the only other version you've heard, rent "Breakfast at Tiffany's"--you'll thank me!

Papillon <[email protected]>
Huntsville, AL - Fri, Feb 25, 2000 at 09:05:50 (PST) | #1

I do believe that Mr Andy Williams was the first to perform Moonriver, and not Frank as some of those here would have us believe.

Good note, Papillon. By the way, "Moon River", according to what I found out, was in written in 1961. The lyrics are by Johnny Mercer and the music by Henry Mancini. I found that in http://www.riverchat.com/post/messages/11645.html

it's too bad that "trash" and "my insatiable one" aren't on any record. he should release a seven inch of the two together. i would also have given anything to hear him do a punk rock two-minute cover of "Moon River" live. sort of like what Me-first and the gimme-gimme's do (my other favorite band outside of morrissey's). but why not mention "What's the world" or "Marie's the name" or any of the songs that the Smith's covered?

trash is the best, and if you ever seen moz
perform this you would agree. this song would
get moz and the band act like a rock band, moz
hopping on the floor speakers every time he said
the word trash and than he'd just shake his body
like a seisure. boz even bashed one of his
guitars.

My favortite cover is trash. I just love the way moz got into the song on "Live in Dallas" This is also the song i'd most like to hear Morrissey cover AGAIN live. How About March 5th??? :-)

Definetely TRASH!! I would be remiss if I didn't say that I do however love my insatiable one, at a near second.
I keep hoping that he will shock us and do Trash in New York tonight, so Moz if ya read this, we would have absolutely NO OBJECTION to you covering this perty little tune!!
I fancy it so.

Skin Storm is the one of the best vocals Morrissey
ever record, he sings it was such passion and you can really imagine the beauty of two lovers sharing the pleasure of each others skin. He really understood the nature of this song and as a gay man hearing another man sing so tenderly about the love of others body is quite beautiful.
Cosmic dancer a very close second, my childhood all over again.

MOONRIVER WAS INDEED MADE POPULAR BY THE GREAT ANDY WILLIAMS(not "old blue gills")AND IS BY FAR THE BEST MOZ COVER - CONVERSELY COSMIC DANCER IS BY FAR THE WORST! A MISTAKE OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS!

Indeed, Havfine is right about the Moon River info...years ago I was lucky enough to find the original soundtrack to the movie (on vinyl!) in mint condition for a buck!!! Yes, Audrey Hepburn on the fire-escape crooning along with a guitar is utterly dreamy - and Morrissey does it beautiful justice!

MOON RIVER IS BY MANCINI/MERCER!!!!!!!!
This makes me mad! I hate Frank Sinatra. He is such a leech. He covers everything. And look, he just got credit for a cover. He doesn't write anything. What increased my hate for him 100x was when he sang the Beatles "Something" and said it's his favorite Lennon/McCartney song (Harrison wrote it as you all know I'm sure). It's bad enough he doesn't write anything but then he can't even take enough interest in what he is singing to give proper credit and appreciation to the author. We are better off with that turd dead and out of the entertainment biz.

Morrissey's covers almost all need alittle work! The Smiths cover of "Marie's the name" is the best! Morrissey singing like Elvis is an absolute pillow for pure ear pleasure!

Regarding "Moon River":

The poll doesn't list who wrote the song, rather, it lists the version Morrissey covered. I can't quite remember where, it may have been in private conversation, but I do remember Morrissey once saying he decided to cover that song after hearing the Frank Sinatra version played at a restaurant (or something like that).

I am amazed that so few voted for "My Insatiable One". It's brilliant, but probably not often heard as it only exists on the "I'm A Poet" boot from Colorado '92, which is STELLAR btw! But in my opinion, one of the best covers. I wholeheartedly agree with the masses on "That's Entertainment", being an avid Paul Weller fan myself! CHEERS!

the original story Breakfast At Tiffany's which

Just when I think I'm probably the only one who feels the way I do about certain songs, I was pleasantly surprised that "Moon River" rated so high. Here, Morrissey performed an old standard with his own gentle, soothing, and at-times hypnotic crooning. Well done, Morrissey. And, as always, a great poll question once again. Let's see how "Drive-in Saturday" stands the test of time.

IGNORAMUSES!! What's all this gruesome "Moon River" quarreling about?? 1st: Every child knows this song was written by Mancini and Mercer for the movie, exclusively. 2nd: It is NOT in the original novel by Truman Capote!! There are a few lines of a song in the book going like this "don't wanna sleep, don't wanna die, just wanna go a-travelin' the pastures of the sky", or something like that; which obviously found its pendant in the movie as "Moon River", and when it's been made famous by one famous rip-off singer or another then it's merely a result out of its first appearance in the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" from the year 1961, yes-you're-still-right-Havfine. 3rd: On a little side note, Capote was not too fond of the movie, especially not of its ending. Read the book, watch the movie, or the other way round if you please, but you'll notice quite a few changes. Each a masterpiece of its own, but quite different from each other. 4th: Amen.

Why on earth has no one mentioned 'Interlude' yet. The way in which Moz and Siouxie's voices go together is beautiful, even though on paper perhaps it shouldn't work. 'Moon River' is good, but the full length version is much too long, while I could never see the attraction of 'That's Entertainment', whoever was singing it.

Wow, I voted for the least popular cover. I always adored "East, West" because it fits with the melodic, lush, 3-minutes-or-less, sensible pop sounds of Morrissey's early work. Like "At Amber", "Interesting Drug", "Hairdresser on Fire", "Sister I'm a Poet", "Will Never Marry", "Everyday", "Playboys", "Suedehead"... the list goes on. While the later glam-influenced "Your Arsenal" was a fabulous, rockin' album, the tunes were more complex and not as "catchy". And there's something to say about the catchiness of early Moz music - it'll stay in your head all day, and it won't insult your intelligence with banal lyrics (as most of today's pop is wont to do).

Well, if I could actually get to hear "My Instiable One", then I could judge. Great song to begin with and I'm Steven could do light-years better than Brett's vocals.

One thing I would like to hear is the Cocteau twins, if they hadn't split up, cover a Morrissey song. "Last of..." may sound quite interesteing.

Oh, my favoutrite cover would be "Certain People I Know"....."Ride a White Swan" - TREX

"Trash" is the best cover version of Morrissey so far.The rythm and the strength given by Moz to his own version of this track changes it completelly from the Original "Trash" song of the N.Y,Dolls. The same happens in Moz version of "Cosmic Dancer" but "Trash" is a much better song

Why do all of these covers sound like they were recorded under heavy sedation? I've often wondered why he would cover songs without adding anything to them except a splash of NiQuil. Some of these songs were not even worth writing in the first place and none have really benefitted significantly from his treatment. Leave that to Paul Young, I'll take original material any day.

Actually the Skin Storm I have is on the Pregnant for the Last Time single (with Cosmic Dancer and Dissapointed live). Maybe the American version is different?
Anyway, if it isn't on the Love life single, I've changed my plea to Guilty will be, which is just as good. You can't really go wrong with most of his b-sides though, can you?

Lily,

Another top b-side that has come to mind is "Nobody Loves Us" on the Dagenham Dave single. Should have been the A-side.....

Best cover Moz has done would have to be trash. Best live cover I have seen him do would be "The Yellow Rose Of Texas".....soundcheck during the Houston leg of the Your Arsenal Tour( it was funny to hear him do it, but also great). Best cover of a smiths song......" THE OCEAN BLUE"...doing THERE IS A LIGHT-live. AMAZING

Allow me to explain the Sinatra mention in the Moon River Credit. Although Moon River was written by Henry Mancini(music) and Johnny Mercer(lyrics), Morrissey's personal favorite version of the song, and the one from which he most borrows for his beautiful cover, is the Frank Sinatra version.
That's right, ol' blue eyes did it, and did it well. Sorry for the run on sentence...

This poll now has the second highest number of votes after the "favourite lyricist" poll. 126 more votes to top that, keep voting and see if we can smash 2000 votes for the first time!

P.S. Let's see more votes for Skin Storm, it's a fantastic cover and Bradford deserved more success.

Skin Storm is the best song, because it's emotive, sensual and melodic.

Defenitly Interlude. Just listen to the words. Loving you is a world that's strange, so much more than my heart can hold. Loving you makes the whole world change, loving you I could not grow old. If you don't have the cash to buy the CD where the song resides just hop on the net and find a good MP3 site. Of course the addition of vocals by Siouxsie doesn't hurt.

Drive In Saturday is wonderful. The "You don't really like this song, do you?" lyric addtion makes it an insta-classic.
What about Morrissey's cover of Harry Rag by the Kinks???

Morrissey and Siouxsie together? It's like a dream come true! I don't think there's really any competition, although anything Morrissey records is bound to be good.
