From Monty Clift:

Morrissey was mentioned in today's (Saturday, February 12) NATIONAL POST in a brief article about "One name" movie stars, models etc.

"[...]When it comes to women there is Oprah, Madonna, Cher, Liza, Whoopi, Alanis, Sade, Mariah, Celine, Shania, Whitney, Aretha, Diana, Evita and Ellen. In the late 1980s and early 1990s there were the supermodels: Naomi, Cindy, Linda, Claudia. Then you have the men: Stallone, Schwarzenegger, DeNiro, Pitt, Cruise, Gibson, Cage, Eastwood, Spacey, Morrissey, Jagger, Bowie, Warhol, Spielberg."

Eh, not strictly accurate. Only Madonna, Cher and Morrissey really qualify. Sexy divas, ow!

For those males listed, really only Morrissey is accurate. The others are often called by their first and last name. Some people think SPM first name is Morrissey. Everone knows and uses the first names of those other males.

why are the one name women typically id'd by their first names and the men by their last? no i'm not suggesting some mysogynistic subplot, just noticed it and it seemed rather curious.
