"Rock 'n' Roll Middle School" comic/article

Thanks to Brutalful and also Ali for letting me know about an article and comic which appeared in BAM "California's Music Magazine" (Mar. 12). From Ali:

...There is a great little cartoon of Michael Stipe, Bob Mould, Paul Westerburg, and Morrissey as students in a classroom. The article basically says that these guys won't have the comeback chance that artists like Eric Clapton had, or something of that sort...

More on Never Been Kissed

From Luis Garcia:

On Thursday March 11, I got a glimpse at a sneak preview for the movie Never Been Kissed, it actually opens on April 9 on U.S theaters.  I was really stunned to hear The Smiths and how long they were exposed in a major studio release (it seemed as if they played the whole tune) with the song "Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" just as the movie's climax was being revealed.

Tom Jones?

From Conor:

I was watching a music program on Irish television on Saturday and there was a short item about Tom Jones putting together an album of duets and contemporary cover versions [it was described as being a similar idea to Mike Flowers Pops]. I'm not sure but I think Morrissey's name was mentioned but I don't know if it was as an artist that was approached and declined or if Tom Jones will cover one of his songs. Mojo magazine mentions the project but not Morrissey so maybe I heard it wrong. Cerys Matthews of Catatonia is confirmed as being involved.

Smiths - 'Mythical band of the month' (France)

From Isa:

I've just stumbled across an article in a French newsletter called "Contact", it's for the people who hold a FNAC membership card. The FNAC is a superstore like Virgin Megastore but with a huge book and new technology department as well (literature, music, videos, hi-fi, computers ...).

In this newsletter there is an interview with Philippe Manoeuvre who
presented the famous French programme 'Les Enfants du Rock' on TV in the eighties. On today's music he says: "personne n'arrive à la cheville des Smiths, dernier groupe mythique dans l'histoire du rock" [ no band has equaled the Smiths so far, they are the last mythical band in rock history].

This month the FNAC launches a new commercial deal called TRIBU[TE]
(tribu is French for tribe - so it's a pun!): each month a mythical band / singer will be the FNAC's host, their CD's will be displayed at reduced price and there will be a free brochure in which the artist's discography and biography are detailed.

The Smiths are the first band to be honored! It's called "TRIBU[TE]
No 1: the best of the Smiths".
The selected albums are Hatful, Meat, Queen, and Strangeways...

"Rhymes with star"

From Philip Quatrino:

The answer is, "In the Smiths Morrissey sang and this person played the guitar." Give up? So did all three contestants on "Rock and Roll Jeopardy" on VH1 Friday night (Mar. 12) at 9:30 pm est.
