Smiths - #20 in Music of the Millennium Poll

From Anon:

Last Saturday night, November 13th, Channel 4 presented a 3 hour show announcing the results of their Millennium Music Poll. The poll, in association with HMV and Classic FM, was the largest music poll ever taken in the UK with over 1/2 million people voting.

The first results announced on the show were the Top 20 Best Band's Of The Millennium. To my utter surprise The Smiths were number 20, not only that but they showed quite a long clip of The Smiths in concert playing 'Bigmouth Strikes Again'. Now, of all the bands announced only 3 had footage shown, The Smiths (no. 20), The Stone Roses (no. 13) and The Beatles (no. 1). Believe it or not a few boy bands and teen stars including The Backstreet Boys (no.19) actually beat The Smiths, which a lot of the presenters seemed embarrassed about. Which could have been why they emphasized the genuinely good bands by showing footage of them.

I thought it was a great result, considering that overall the poll was overly mainstream and current, with most people picking today's popular bands over bands past. So, maybe England hasn't forgotten The Smiths or Morrissey?

Comments / Notes

The majority of the people who said that the Beatles were the best band ever have, in all likelihood, never listened to a Beatles album in full. Well I have, and there all crap. Revolver, the white (@#!!!) album, none of these hold a flame to Morrissey's Kill Uncle. People just say the Beatles are the greatest because its the thing to say. Well i'm off for a cup of tea. Elvis rocks.

The Beatles'Revolver not as good as Kill Uncle? Are you mad? Obviously you havent listened to ant Beatles music. Anyway, just because some people havent listened to a whole Beatles album, it doesnt mean they arent the greatest and people dont realise that they are. The Smiths though close, never produced music as good as the Beatles as consistently or as long, or changed the topics on which they sung about. She Loves You to Revolution- work it out for yourself.

I must admit The Beatles are the best band ever. Even that recent release of never before found single of "Hey Bulldog" just goes to show they were totally ahead of their time. Just as in the case of The Smith...but if they would have stuck together as long as The Beatles...I have no doubt that The Smiths would have passed The Beatles. Thats why so many beloved fans of The Smiths were truly dissapointed of the break-up. God knows what would have become of possible masterpieces that The Smiths never had a chance to put into future albums. Nevertheless Morrissey still holds strong as a cornerstone in pop music.

If you cannot reconigize the musical accomplishments of the Beatles then you are the one who is musically challenged. In the least you should credit them, non-musically, for paying the way for Britisih bands in America, of who our loving and talented Moz and The Smiths are part of.
And, again to say that the Beatles albums are crap is, theres just no point even trying to explain the accomplishments that they've made, the skill and the style to you; there is no hope for you if you can't see it.

How can you compare the backstreet boys to
the ever so great THE SMITHS.

Erm.. And I thought Moz fans would understand irony(but you know what they say about Americans), methinks Draise Train is having a birrova laugh here.. he/she doesn't actually think Kill Uncle is better than Revolver - the quintessentially perfect album after Pet Sounds(if you believe these polls that is).

And of course The Smiths are better than the fuc**** Beatles.. sure, they don't have the cultural impact(noone ever will), aren't as influential and don't have the diversity and volume of work, but they were better musically and almost as prolific in their short lifespan. The problem with The Beatles is they thought everything they did was good, hence worthless songs like when I'm 64, whereas The Smiths only had a couple of bad songs and they don't have anything to match I know it's over or there is a light that never goes out. They may technically be the best band ever and Revolver technically better than The Queen Is Dead - which doesn't have a Yellow Submarine thankfully, but I prefer The Smiths.

Anyway, this poll is a piece of sh*t, as these things generally are. The Smiths were more popular in the one 2 years ago. Now Robbie Williams is 8th most influential musician?! But at least they recognised the genius of Madonna ;)

John, who are you to decide if When I'm Sixty Four is worthless or not, and the musicial signifigance of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band was quite profound on the world of music as we know it, as were other albums of The Beatles...I will say to you, what Morrissey would, 'Opinions everybody's got one, good taste is more specified'.

Well, I do think The Smiths had more to offer than The Beatles. But I don't mind The Beatles being more popular, and therefore considered "more influential". They were, but that doesn't have to mean they were the best band ever. I mean, The Ramones were also very influential, but they're not the best band ever. At least I don't think so. There have been many influential bands, but there can be only one "best band". Which, in my opinion, The Smiths were. Was. Nevermind.

what i meant was that the Beatles represent 'the best of British'. And considering that this was a British poll it's not surprising that they cleaned up in so many of the polls dispite the fact that songs like 'she loves me', 'rocky rachoon' and 'revolution number 9' are not revolutionary but pretty ordinary. Paul McCarthy's Wings should have featured more. i think i've made my point. well, i'm off for a pint.

I HAVE to say that whoever said that The Beatles are crap has a BIG problem of their own. The Beatles was and will always be the best band ever to exist. I love The Smiths, but we're talking about 2 very different types of music. The Beatles music is very humorous, silly, fun, or can be depressing, but very creative and original. The Smiths very depressing, creative, original, excellent. Lennon/McCartney and Morrissey/Marr will always be the best songwriters of all time.

Draise train you are trully a spineless bastard!
without the beatles moz would not have the ideas for the majority of the songs he has made. take Billy Budd for instance...does Dr. Robert from REVOLVER ring a bell. It is evident just from these comments that you are the only IDIOT!!! in the world who does not appreciate great music.

I cannot believe the draise train's comments. As a Smiths fan, you should more than most appreciate what good songwriting is all about and none were better than the Lennon/McCartney combination. I was a Smiths fan before I really listened to the Beatles and, hand on heart, I have to say the Beatles are the greatest band of all time. Listen to "Magical Mystery Tour" from start to finish and say it ain't so. I dare you!
