Time Out magazine - London mention

From Gladioli:

I found this in Time Out magazine (10/11/99), the main "what-to-do" weekly publication in London (scan of article). Yet another example of people not having a mind of their own. Plus note the Mexican reference at the end of the article- tres racist indeed... If Mozzer was to say anything like that in one of his interviews he would be torn to pieces!

Still, as from tomorrow, London is his and it owes him a living!

Morrissey
Forum
Sat to Tue

Fame, fame, fatal fame, it plays terrible tricks on the... ahem, sorry. Anyway, there we were in Atlanta, Georgia -- me, a photographer and a press officer -- when the bloke I'd come thousands of miles to interview had his photo taken, and then locked himself in his hotel room until we went away again. Admittedly, I'm not at my most gorgeous aprčs jet lag, but then, Morrissey's reputation had fallen so far by autumn 1997 (the time of this incident) that one of my TO colleagues suggested, absurdly, that he'd clocked my off-while features, figured I was bound to ask him awkward questions about his racial attitudes, and done a runner. It's more likely he was simply playing that favored Moz role, the awkward interviewee, but still: how did the reputation of our '80s hero fall so low? And why does he behave like such a twat?

These are questions that will almost certainly remain unanswered. In rare interviews, the mardy Mancunian continues to reel out the 'I regret nothing' line, oblivious to any dismay he may have caused with lyrics such as 'England for the English' (from 'National Front Disco') or quotes like 'To get on "Top Of The Pops" these days one has, by law, to be black'. What we do know is that, despite being unsigned at present, the former Smiths leader is Big In America. Particularly among the Mexican community. That's the Mexican community. Which is about as weird as a very weird person on a weird holiday in fuckin' Weird World.

So maybe Mexicans understand a level of Moz irony that we sensitive Brits just didn't get. Whatever, with four nights fast selling out at the Forum, the times appear to be changing for Morrissey. But Moz diehards needn't worry. The music will have stayed exactly the same.

Run away Gary Mulholland.

His report on Morrisey lacks the depth of a sombrero flattened by a silver porsche.

it seems he wants to say to morrissey, "(the dead of night...) ...i've tried to see your point of view, but could not hear or see for jealousy...where've you been?, where'd you go?, you never phoned when you said you would, do you lie?, do you try?, to keep in touch, you know you should...i've tried to see your point of view, but could not hear or see for jealousy...
i never knew...

Morrissey is not mexican.
He will never be mexican.
He has no clue what it is like to be mexican.
Morrissey needs to quit playing up to any race,
and just play music.
Would you mexicans have a problem with that?
If so, you don't like him because of his music.
It is a little peculiar that most of you think that his last three albums are so great when yet they are the worst things he has ever put out.
"Vauxhaul and I" sucks compared to any of the previous albums. Yeah sure, Morrissey really
drives through East LA in his silver porshe. He
has a leather couch and huge cross in his house.
Morrissey has lost it. He must be on drugs.
What's his next album going to be called
"I wish I was Born Mexican" ???
or
"We Is Morrissey" ???

oh racism,

look, ese! you have flipped your wig, vato! music is the only thing that matters. alas, i know how you feel, fear is your only god...afraid of the dominant and darker genes. first, you steal our land and now you want to take even the remotest semblance of dignity from our hearts. well, "there's too many people, planning your downfall, when your spirit's on trial, these nights can be frightening, so you stand by the board, full of fear and intention, and if you think that they're listening, well, you've got to be joking, sleep transports sadness, to some other mid-brain, but, when your profession, is humiliation, well..."

(trip out, ese-music! grand, whimsical strings)
daaa-da-daa...da-daaaa-daa-da-da...come on, sing it with me, you know the song...

tiss, tiss...jealousy rears it's ugly head again. next time, mijo, just get with me, you've got my name and e-mail address. unlike you, i am not a coward, nor hide behind anonymity.

Who gives the right to talk about us"mexicans" in such a despective way???Allow me to laugh HARHARHARHARHARHAR... I agree with Felipe that smells terribly to jealousy ...you wonder why *we mexicans* understand him? Well Iīm afraid thatīs something your nature canīt never comprehend ,starting from your royal and rancid family right?
And "Racist" ...Itīs so obvious you donīt have also a clue what is it like to be mexican right? Well first of all, stop watching televison ,leave "hard copy" , and READ READ, illustrate your poorself ..Mexico isnīt just the border or Tijuana , my friend ..Mexico has a history that your contry sadly never had does the date 1425 rings the bell? well, unfortunately not even dollars or your uncle Sam can buy culture or warmth...tsk tsk tsk ..We may not be rich or have the "perfect" president --har har har-- But we have something: life-latin, hot blood, soul..just exactly what the world needs..such a shame Martin Luther King didnīt succesed as much as he dreamt..
Besides, I speak three languages ..excuse me how many did you say you speak? oh , I see just "english", language that wasnīt exactly born in North America right? does Shakespeare says something?
Oh , and by the way , I was in Milan Gig , where Morrissey took me a picture (yes himself) and his crew also ,Just for being MEXICAN ...and sang for me hehehhehe and the editor from that zine "True to you" miss Riley took every note from my beautiful self just for being mexican ..
Donīt believe me? look for the next issue or e-.mail me , because YES like the wise Messinaīs bros/carnales mios said: I donīt hide behind anyone , you have my address , and if you wanna meet me Iīll be in San Diego and LA if you like ...

It's so funny that none of you have anything to
say about the "We Is Morrissey" remark. You
ignore everything else I say just because I say
the word Mexican. And by the way, this land never originally belonged to you. Teachers Are
Afraid Of Their Pupils is a lousy song.
Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others, Rusholme Ruffians, and Such A Little Thing... are much
better songs.

To: Morrissey is a racist but I still love him,

I found it funny that you pointed out there's a difference between mexicans/latino's. It just reminds me of the time when Morrissey made the comment one night "to be spanish would be a relief" then the next night he said "to be mexican would be a relief", someone must have told him there was a difference there. I would like to know who of the mexicans or latinos are born or living in America? And to the ones who are: do you hate this country? I don't, I think I'm lucky to live here. When Morrissey can't respect the country I live in and HE LIVES IN, I'm going to get a little upset. Wearing the mexican flag in America does not make sense because we are living in America. I would like him to praise the country he lives in or leave because he certainly doesn't have to be here.

I do beleive that there are many beautiful parts
to the country of Mexico. However I am not refering to Mexico. I am refering to East LA,
WHICH IS NOT MEXICO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell me the beauty of East LA. Tell me where I can walk safely down the street at 3 in the morning or afternoon.

To all my racist ignorant friends:
I am a Mexican American living in East LA (Yes, I do walk the East LA streets anytime I feel like it!). I've been a devout Morrissey fan for well over nine years, which is what brings me to this site. Nevertheless, I am horrified at the fact that I cannot seem to get away from this stupid racism!! I've lived in predominantly white suburban neiborhoods, eg. Northridge, Granada Hills, and guess what? I could not go buy groceries, etc, without getting dirty looks and stuff. Therefore, I prefer to stay where I belong; East LA. My two years living among ignorance have thought me a valueble lesson. That is, "I will never truly be an American", despite being a CITIZEN of this country. But, screw that! I am my own person. I know what I like and I know what I want. And that applies to all us Mexican Morrissey-loving "hooligans". We love Morrissey. And to some extent, "We is (are) Morrissey". If you where at the UC Irvine show, you will know what I mean. Us Mexicans, where getting crushed at the front trying to see and hopefully touch Morrissey, while our counterpart "white americans" where off to the sides like little "Bitches"! No wonder Morrissey acknowledges us Mexicans. So, is it really so strange? So check out my website and substantiate your racism. But please, carry your BALLS in your hand in leave your email next time.

The Always Flamboyant,

Al Jordan

...would I also be labled racist if I too did not like "black" music, or the credit it some how gets. Much of soul,r&b,rap is over rated, and it just happens that their black. If rap was Arabian, would Moz be considered anti-semitic for loathing "Ali Rap",,,,,,THINK..
