Q+A
Morrissey

He lost a court case, no longer has a record deal and claims to have no fans. Yet Morrissey soldiers on. "I'm in love with the pop moment," he tells Alex Needham

Your forthcoming UK tour has a Mexican theme. Why?
Because I saw El Vez [a Mexican Elvis impersonator] recently and I'd like to have a go at stealing all his ideas

Have you been recording a new album?
No. It hasn't been possible. I signed with Mercury US in '97, and they immediately collapsed, so I've spent a long time trying to get disentangled. Most artists were just 'released' from their contracts and initially I wasn't one of them. The label was bought out by Seagram [Universal], who decided to let me go. I was very grateful

So you are, in fact, without a record deal?
I've been on so many labels, I have no idea where I'll end up next. Rough Trade, probably

Any new song titles you'd care to share with us?
No. You'll have plenty of opportunity to poke fun at them when the next album is released. Why start early?

So what have you been doing for two years?
Driving around LA minding my own business. Stimulating

The last public sighting of you was when you turned up at a signing at an HMV in New Mexico, apparently unbeknown to the organisers. Why did you show up?
Unbeknown! It was completely organised! Otherwise, why would there have been 'organizers'? Do you think I just turned up at a record shop in New Mexico carrying a wallpaper table, shouting at people to form an orderly queue? I somehow don't think so!

Where are you living now, and what's your gaff like?
I live in Los Angeles, in a house built in 1931 by Clark Gable; to his specifications, that is. He built it for Carole Lombard, but she was killed in a plane crash before she'd had time to pick out the curtains. Since then, I'm told F Scott Fitzgerald lived here, and John Schlesinger. But not together. Also, Robert Stigwood threw the Saturday Night Fever party here on the night of its premiere. So, all those people have sat on my toilet. Incredible, isn't it?

What sort of fans do you attract these days?
As far as I know, I don't attract any fans at all

How do you feel about being referred to, as you were in reviews of your last UK performance, as Jarvis Cocker's dad?
Just relieved that they didn't say Joe Cocker

Are you currently feeling devious, truculent, or unreliable?
The judge who said those words only did so because they described exactly what I am not, nor have ever been. He would be delighted that you remember his quote. This judge, John Weeks, had his eye on the press when he made that comment. Some judges are a bit like ex-drummers, they'll do anything for a bit of press attention. I was delighted when Michael Stipe called him a "fuckhead" in Q magazine. It was the first time anyone had ever stood up for me in the press on this matter

What words describe your frame of mind?
I'm mostly serene, and still in love with music and 'the pop moment'

And are you buff or weedy these days?
A little bit of each, but not much of either

What's your fitness regime?
I only swim. I used to walk a lot in London, but if you walk in Los Angeles people lean out of windows and point at you

What was the last film that you enjoyed?
I came across a VHS copy of Nil By Mouth in a shop in Hollywood for $99. This was before the film was released, and before much was generally known about it. I was intrigued, bought it, and spent the next two weeks watching it non-stop

Which contemporary musicians do you rate?
Goldie, Moby, Mouldy, and Tricky. Sorry, just kidding about Mouldy- there's no such person

What is it that so horrifies you about modern life?
In Britain, politics. Considering the obsession that the British media have with politics and politicians, it's surprising how catastrophic British politicians are. The British media still don't have the nerve to admit to themselves how useless Tony Blair is. Useless for Britain, useless for Europe. Useless, useless, useless. I think it's sad that England can't produce one single inspiring politician

Having anatomised British culture so exhaustively, why do you no longer want to live here?
Because I've anatomised British culture so exhaustively. Besides, I can't stand Channel 5

Ah. And you've also described the BBC as "scum". Why?
You wouldn't ask this question if you'd ever sampled the food in the BBC canteen

When's the definitive Morrissey novel coming out?
As soon as Melvyn Bragg snuffs it. Fingers crossed

There's yet another Smiths-to-reform rumour doing the rounds. Are you and Johnny Marr ever going to get back together?
Well, let me put it this way: no

How about 'the other two'?
I've never met Gillian or Stephen. Apparently, Gillian's keyboard technique has been compared to Jo Brand pole-vaulting

Given your admiration of the Kray twins, what do you think of Tricky recording a whole album with gangsters?
If Tricky made an album with Princess Anne and a lump of sugar, I'd buy it. And I don't think I ever said I admired the Kray twins. Did I?

At which point did you stop being celibate, why and who with?
I don't see how anyone would benefit from seeing that kind of information in print. Least of all me

Viv Nicholson was a Smiths icon. Are you tempted by the musical, Spend, Spend, Spend, made about her life?
Yes. I'm tempted to avoid it

After everything that has happened to you, why on earth do you still bother?
For the same reason that Saint Francis of Assisi bothered

I just love his interviews. You know, I don't think I've ever heard him curse before. I liked it very much.

Fantastic interview. I was surprised to read that Michael Stipe stood up for him. I didn´t know he liked Morrissey.

Yay another classic Morrissey interview. I loved his answer to the celibate question. Also maybe now we all know there will be NO smiths reunion. We heard it from Mr ~M~ himself. It will be interesting to read the interviews when his new album comes out.

Michael Stipe has previously tried (without any success) to get together with Morrissey. He has written letters, but Morrissey never replied. Maybe it's that "Shiny Happy People" song that turns Morrissey off?

How delightful to see him delightful. Not that I feared Morrissey's wit had atrophied, but we have so rarely seen reporters recently pose questions other than Why Are You Still Here? It's nice to see someone give the man an opportunity to expound.

As for foul expressions, with the exception of one parenthetical line in "Tony the Pony," I don't believe I have any notion of having seen Morrissey cross-the-"f"-word-line ("arse" and "crap" and such usually creep up, usually while referencing the lottery, the past, and the Fourth Estate).

Oh dear, another interview with the Mozzer and he says absolutely NOTHING.
He won't talk about his new songs, or even in what label he may have an interest.
"Aren't-I-Cute" answers from a flippant, forty year-old man who is too old to act like a teenage schoolgirl.
I've read more interesting interviews with Jennifer Lopez.

I for one, thought it was a great intereview. Classic Morrissey wit throughout. So what if he didnt really say "anything"? Thats the beauty behind it. Would u rather he just answered everything in a straightfoward manner, or how about 'yes' or 'no' answers? I think its great to be vague. Leaves more mystique, intrigue and imagination to it all. Fun for the whole family!

Hey Bigmouth:

I kind of agree with your comments, but at the same time, when you reach the level of success that Morrissey has, you can pretty much say and act as you please. His replies are pretty funny (the comment about the wallpaper table is hilarious), and it's great to see that he's not trying to be all fakey like the rest. He's a smartass and he's always been that way and always will be. That's probably one of the things I like about the man.

Buck Toothed Girl,

I think you may be mistaken. It has been widely documented around here that Michael's "meeting" with Morrissey did come to fruition. Michael and Moz met in Morrissey's garden for about an hour several or more years ago. I think I may even still have a NME (London music mag) with an interview with REM that hits on that meeting. I'll see if I can find it tonight and bring it to work tomorrow.

Morrissey once quoted Paul Weller using the f-word, so he has said it. Only when quoting other people, it seems.

Michael Stipe and Morrissey have met and they walked around London together. haven't you seen the picture of them together? Stipey is friends with everyone.

Nice joke about listening to Tricky et al. Morrissey is so evasive.

I don't think anyone really notices, but Mozz is playing with the medias heads. He does'nt give a crap what anyone thinks. He is genius, and he really doesn't care if anyone understands him or not, especially the press ot interviewers.. I heard Stipe and him were actually very good friends.. Morrissey has never received any respect what so ever.. I am from Dallas,Tx and moved to Nashville for other reasons than country, but I have talked to many writers out here and they are pathetic.. They have never ever heard of the greatest writer ever(MOZZ).. I am a poet myself, he is definitely my number one influence..By the way, the person who said New Order sucks, whatvere, they are incredible.. Doesn't anyone see.. All these bands are connected.. They all know each other and have done so much for music, when music was pretty much going to die, Back Street Boys, I am going to kill myself if hear that crap again> Garth Brooks, the greatest illusionist of all time,no talent *@#$$%@!%!!!!!

Sorry about that Larry. Gee, I'll try to be more consistent and reflect my faith in my every post. Please continue your longstanding readership and if you like, please waste more time to comment on my every comment. If you are such a long time reader, you'd see that I've gotten a lot better. I'm probably the biggest smartass at this site, but I try to control it. It's the abundance of other smartasses at this site that bring out the worst in me. Why don't you hyper focus on one of them for a change. I think with your vast reading that you claim to do, you'd see that it's quite common to reply to someone that says something stupid in response to an innocent post. I'm innocent Larry.

To rob (#3):

It would be rather ignorant of Morrissey (who came from the same area as the members of New Order and whose ex-partner has been collaborating with one of them) to have no clue as to who The Other Two are. His knowledge of pop music is frighteningly vast.

I totally agree, though: he hasn't lost his penchant for "spontaneously clever" quips!

Well, it is quite obvious Morrissey has found balance in his life in recent years:"the balance seems serene" as he sung in one of his greatest recent songs. But doesn't being 'happy' and living a well-balanced life stand in the way of great Art? After all, how many truly brilliant songs did he write since Vauxhall and I? Hopefully John Cale and some drama in his life can lift him up to the standard of that album.

The Smiths should never contemplate getting together at any point in time. The Smiths are amongst the elite but small selection of bands that should never remake the film. Like, for instance Led Zeppelin, both bands created something so untouchable that thay could only fail in trying to offer it again. Some people have the intelligence to realise when they really have broke the mould,
John Cleese said, " I never tried to make another sitcom because I knew that I would never be able to beat Fawlty Towers'.
Very, very few, whatever they create, ever break the mould but sadly some of those `very few` never know when to detach themselves from their particular stroke of genius.

Three out of the last four Morrissey albums have been stronger than `Strangeways here we come' and Marr and especially Morrissey are different people with different perspectives on life than they were and had when they were Smiths.

Vauxhall and I is possibly Morrissey's finest solo moment, but, the `hate it or love it' Southpaw Grammar is extremely strong and shows a musically adventurous Morrissey. Morrissey also rates this album highly, he still includes at least three of the songs in his live set. If you really listen to his voice you will hear him at his most beautiful and melodic.

Vauxhall and I sounds the way it does because
it was Morrissey's last stab to appeal
to a more mainstream crowd so he could rake in
the cash that it would yield before he was over the hill.
It didn't do as well as he wanted it to-
the tour was cancelled-
He tells the whole story in the incredible
single "Boxers"-
Since then he seems to just work at pleasing the fans that have always stuck by him.

P.S COACHELLA was the greatest (at least for me-I was baking!).
I plan on dropping again when he comes back to the
