Johnny Marr "Walking Down Madison" demo clip (mp3)
Posted on Tue, Aug 17 1999 at 9:14 a.m. PDT

Thanks to Derick Greene for the following:

With all the recent talk of Johnny Marr's new solo project, I thought it was a good time to share a gem I received several years ago. This is a clip of an instrumental "demo" of "Walking Down Madison" (:30, 475k mp3) which Johnny wrote for Kirsty MacColl (who later added lyrics and took half the writing credits; the song was produced by Steve Lillywhite back in 1991).

This early version of the song sounds very little like the final released version and more like "Money Changes Everything" and "The Draize Train," in my opinion. I will be offering the complete 4 minute 21 second track shortly. Email me ([email protected]) for details. As a side note, I dropped off a copy of this track at Morrissey's Los Angeles house on Saturday (P.S. please do not ask for the address as it won't be available).

Comments / Notes

Derek, Great sound clip, Marr rocks. A lot
of people write in and say they met Moz however
if you really had Moz's address you would be dying to give it out but your not so I know your lying. Good try........

Morrissey or the Smiths sing it?

I don't know Morrissey's LA address, but it's not like it would be hard to find out. He named all the famous people who had lived in it in the past, so all you'd need to do is look in some books on Hollywood houses, or ask one of the "Star Maps" people all over LA.

Matt <[email protected]>
- Tue, Aug 17, 1999 at 10:08:09 (PDT) | #4

A smart idea - looking to "Star Maps," etc. In fact, once Moz had mentioned those famous people, I looked at those sites to see if the address I KNEW to be Morrissey's was listed and, quite strangely, they list all of the houses (Gable's, Lombard's, etc.) EXCEPT the one Moz is currently in. Sorry.

WWG's line's a take off from 'Walking Down Madison'- good song. Kirsty's work is fairly decent- it seems like Johnny shows up on a few tracks every time.

Anyway, check it out- anybody who sings backing vocals for the Smiths can't be all that bad.

Why did he have to put a "side note" of going to "drop off a copy" at his house in LA? What relevance did that have to anything? Or was it just to show off. Man, he must be tight with the man...Hey I'm in with the "in" crowd too! I live in LA!...blaaah

So since this was a hit over 5 years ago, what is the point? Maybe next time you can "drop off" a tape of new Johnny Marr material or at least some Smiths recordings.

As Steve Martin might say: EXCUSE ME! David warned me about mentioning dropping it off at Morrissey's. My intention was not to brag, but rather to let you know that it was quite possible that even Morrissey was hearing this for the first time (as far as I know). If I wanted to brag I could have brought up any number of events (not that Warren would believe any one of them), but you don't see me raving on about my Moz experiences or contributing other information I have, do you? Believe what you want. It's of no relevance to me.

Oh, come on. Everybody secretly knows that everybody secretly wants to track Morrissey down and get into his house and rifle through his dresser drawers and look in his kitchen cupboards and check out his record collection and INVADE HIS LIFE. Everyone wants his address and nobody wants to admit it (because that would be admitting insanity). We are all insane.

- Tue, Aug 17, 1999 at 13:27:18 (PDT) | #14

I don't think you guys are being entirely fair to this guy. Sure, his
side note wasn't all that relevant, but I don't think it was all
bragging. Braggers usually like to brag as soon as they are able about
everyhing. If he had this song as long as he says, and he was a bragger,
wouldn't he have shared it with us some time before now? Weren't some of
you guys the same people that ripped on the guy who said Morrissey has
grey hair? Do you have some sort of complex about people who know things
you don't. And to the guy who said there is no point in offering this
song now - since we've never heard it, it is a new song as far as were
concerned. I think it's cool that he knows where he lives, even though I
don't want to know. I just hope you guys didn't bite the hand that fed
us, who knows what else this guy has!!

Perhaps, we are overlooking the obvious. It looks like somebody is doing a market test by putting the sound clip on the website. What better way to get feedback before releasing it. Also, he said he knows where Moz lives (to add credibility).

But here is the clincher. In Lithuanian, the word "Dirrick" is slang for bathroom (i.e. John) and the word for the color green is "Marre" (pronounced Marr, silent "e"). Coincidence, I think not.

Derrick Greene = Johnny Marr!!!

I'm intrigued by the phrase, "dropped off at his house". What does that mean? Doesn't neccessarily sound like he knows Moz- it sounds like he left it at the door or something.

I'm also confused by what Moz would want with the demo. 'Walking Down Madison' is a great song, but what would Moz want with it- it's not new, it's not his song or anything.

Either way, that's cool if you meet Morrissey- He doesn't live in a hermetically sealed vault or anything- it's possible. We just need to go on without calling either names- we all love Moz/Smiths- let's get along

For the people that I talked to the other day, I got my 2nd CD. It is The Queen Is Dead. I got it used for only $4.99. It is also really good. So far my favorite song is Cemetary Gates. Thanks to everybody that gave a reccommendation on what CD I should get. (this was the only used Smiths or Moz CD, so I got it)

Since I am a new fan, I am trying to learn a lot a bout Moz. After reading these messages I learned that he lives in L.A. But, is he married or have a girlfriend? Does he have kids? I know he is from England, does he also live there? Is he a soccer fan? If some body can tell me this stuff I would appreciate it. Because in 8th grade english class I will have to do a 10 page report on some body you admire. I want to do it on Moz if I have enough information. Thanks.

I'm not sure if you were aware, but Morrissey and Johnny Marr are personally acquainted. If Moz were interested in hearing something of Johnny's, or if Johnny wanted him to hear something, I'm sure they wouldn't need people like us to drop off tapes for them.

And Dale - try going to the message board. Easier to communicate there.

You people are making me crazy. Enough of this
trifling argument. I am confident that Derrick is not name-dropping here. However, if he were, who cares? So be it. If you all wish to engage in some silly semantic debate about what "dropping off" means, why don't you kindly ask Derrick to be more specific and he might just clarify it. But, what might be more reasonable is to just leave the entire thing alone.

CLASSIFIED - Wed, Aug 18, 1999 at 12:29:11 (PDT) | #44

Ok, Dale, assuming you're only 13 I wish I didn't have to tell you this. Morrissey is a sexually ambiguous figure. That guy was joking about Morrissey's 'taste in women' because Moz really has never been associated with women. He has never publicly declared a sexual orientation. A lot of people think he's gay, and Morrissey's lyrics, cover art and conversation are sprinkled with gay references. He is also quite popular with gay people (tho I think it's safe to say most of his fans are straight). Don't worry that he's an immoral guy - he spent years and years being totally chaste and totally asexual. If you want more insight into Morrissey's personality, you should read some of his interviews, which are quite entertaining. There are lots at 'it may all end tomorrow' and 'the arcane old wardrobe'. Some idiots think Moz's 'gayness' is very important, but I don't think it's a big issue for most fans.

Listen guys, when it comes to personal encounters with Morrissey I find it best to have no opinion until it is proven. An example of this is when a guy in the AOL UK-Britpop room told me he met Morrissey. Of course I was naturally skeptical. But I did not ream his ass (like the way that certain folks are doing to Derrick). After a few minutes of chatting with him, he sent me the actual pic of him and Moz! We later went on to be good friends and stuff. So dont criticize what you cant disprove.

Or is it just one jackass using different names?

Thanks for the soundbite. Hard to here many similarities to the Maccoll version. Hope the solo project is a bit more exciting.

P.S. I guess DEADBOY wears his pants with the ass cut out. Just like PRINCE. This allows a passage for oxygen to reach the brain.

Excuse me Mr Fountain, but I am not a jackass and am really interested in having my question answered. I don't know who the other people are, but I am a serious Moz fan and have honest interest in his life.

Jack Armond,
If you really are interested in Moz' sexuality, you should read the message posted from "comatose" on this board. It is about the 45th message posted on this topic.

Deadboy, you are such a sad person. Why must you bring sexual orientation into your comment. I wonder if you're a little confused about your own sexuality.
By the way, if you don't like Morrissey or The Smiths, what are you doing on this website?
Take your ignorance somewhere else.

David,
May I suggest: you collect the names and addresses of everyone who posts here, sell the mailing list to the nearest Scillian buissness man, accept the Noble Peace Prize for riding the world of horror. Or maybe some type of explosive home page, would work. I know its drastic but I've seen more valuable posts on hard core porn sites.
I mean just read the posts for yourself . . .

I just want to say, I have no Idea who this Derrick guy is. I aint his friend and I aint ever
called him, like he says. I imagine he's some scared 30 year old who sleeps next to his mothers room, and pretends Morrissey lives in the abandoned trailer next to his. "Where you going Derrick?" "I'm going to drop some suff off at Morrissey's house, Mom." "Morrissey and Marr, are my bestest friends Ma" "I believe you son, now put some clothes on before you go outside"
Come on Derrick, we'll still like you, even if you dont where morrissey lives. Of course if you do, you could prove it.
I-N IN!! (as opposed to out)

I don't think so, my fraudulent friend. Don't even THINK about posting in my name again.

Like I would ever say something as ridiculous as "In In."

What moron would be insolent enough to go to Morrissey's house? Having met Morrissey a few times, I can tell you, and those who have met him will attest to this, that he doesn't always seem wholly pleased with the idea of stopping for fans--but he does, at acceptable locales, such as outside of concert venues or outside of his hotel where there are other fans...going to his house, or attempting to locate the address, is a joke.

After a nauseating few minutes reading all of this unbelievable and insulting bickering, I felt compelled to add my comments. Why does everyone here feel determined to act like stereotypical Star Trek nerds, fighting over every bit of fact and fiction that comes through here? All of this hassle over who really knows where Morrissey lives is sickening. The most important thing you are not considering is Morrissey's own privacy. You sound like a bunch of potential stalkers waiting to find out where he lives so you can camp out on his doorstep. Why does it anger you so much that someone knows Morrissey's address? It would be careless and dangerous for the address to be given out to all of you maniacs. I can't believe how some of you act as if you're entitled to this information! Face it, people; when the record is finished playing or the concert is over, Morrissey's obligation to us ENDS! He does not owe us his address! Stop fuming with doubts and anger if you hear that someone does know where he lives.
Stop acting like children and behave like the adults you are or are growing up to be. Also, please take your time to express yourselves thoughtfully and intelligently, without resorting to cussing and all-out rage. This only leads to poorly constructed sentences
and atrocious spelling errors..... hardly worthy of a Smiths fan. Thanks for reading this epic.

>>Shut up. You never have anything of relevance
to say, just dumb little comments here and there.
For everyone but Corey my band just wrote its 5th
song its called " Whats the use in Smiling" its
definitely our best one yet. A rockin' guitar and drum solo plus some pretty sweet lyrics too.
Were probably gonna perform live like the 1st week in September, I will keep you guys updated.<<

Does anyone else see the irony in that whole paragraph? NO ONE CARES WARREN! That is the most irrelvent crap I have read on this board. I don't care about your band, no one does. We don't care about your life, and how you get headaches a lot. Or about or cousin's friends brother will be [issed when he finds out you wore his glasses. Stop being a Hypocrite and grow the fuk up. Your flames are getting old. ALl that you post is crap, all you do is criticise everyone who posts, no you're doing it to info that David sees FIT for us to read. God you're such a fake. I don't wanna know what your life is like. You're the only person I hope I don't see at coachella cause I would prolly punch you.

Morrissey is not only gay but straight, bisexual, asexual and trisexual. It depends on a few things....which side of the bed he slept on and what time he woke up. He's sexual......can you believe it?! Morrissey is human just like the rest of us, we are all sexual (if you're not, something is wrong with you) Those of you who constantly ponder that question are pondering it about yourselves too. Morrissey is fine, I'd do him if I could. He just won't have me....boo hoo.
