From Stuart:

...Moz got a mention in the programme 'Stars in their eyes'. It's basically a souped up version of Karaoke, where people come on and have to imitate the voice of their chosen singer.

The competition was coming to an end, and the host was mentioning how serious the competition was (or something), and declared it 'more serious than Morrissey on a serious day', which got a laugh. It annually gets one of the highest TV ratings in Britain so I'd be surprised if someone else hadn't already brought it to your attention.

Incidentally, Moz mentioned the programme in an interview in the September '95 edition of Q when he was asked to comment about Martin Rossiter of Gene...

There have been no Stars In Their Eyes Moz lookasoundalikes fortunately..look at the Jarvis one! Moz also got namechecked in Eastenders last week, at the stall Sonia was browsing through some CDs and the music stall owner Matthew said to her "I didn't know you liked The Smiths Sonia" and Sonia who was depressed(isn't everyone in Eastenders!) said back "I was looking for something to cheer me up" Matthew said "I don't think Morrissey would do that, why don't you try something a little less talented like a boy band!" Sonia then stormed off in a huff! This is pretty cool I thought cos The Smiths are about 2 generations away from today's music so maybe today's kids are catching on :o) Time for a major Smiths revival methinks!

The only other namecheck I saw was on Brookside a couple of months ago when Peter said to Jackie or Lyndsey Corkhill "You're going about there like a walking Morrissey song!" Moz of course appeared in an 80s spin off of that show called South.

Oops I see I ain't the only one who noted the Moz reference in Eastenders below...glad to know that such miniscule namechecks are considered newsworthy enough!
