KROQ's top 106.7 bands - Smiths #15

Thanks to those who sent in the results. Morrissey - solo did not even make the poll. Or were his votes just combined with The Smiths'?

From Chiefbrody:

Smiths rank a mere 15th of "the biggest bands of all time" according to KROQ listeners. Obviously the votes were split betwixt The Smiths and Morrissey, otherwise I think we know who'd be #1. It's one thing to have Depeche Mode ranked higher but Sublime?

From Nitin Nayar:

The Smiths ranked #15 in KROQ's audience-chosen top 106.7 bands of all time this Memorial Day weekend. Although I am part of the "what do we care what KROQ thinks" crowd, I must insist that the KROQ audience in Los Angeles is an accurate cross-section of America's "alternative"-listening audience as a whole. It's impressive the Smiths attained such a high listing given the list is peppered with "undiscussables" such as Korn, the Offspring and Sublime. Other alternative heavyweights such as New Order, David Bowie, REM, the Clash, the Police and Bob Marley failed to even break the top 20.

20. Tori Amos
19. Blink 182
18. Beck
17. No Doubt
16. Nine Inch Nails
15. The Smiths
14. Oingo Boingo
13. Garbage
12. Korn
11. Green Day

10. Rage Against the Machine
9. Sublime
8. Pearl Jam
7. The Smashing Pumpkins
6. Nirvana
5. The Cure
4. U2
3. The Offspring
2. Beastie Boys
1. Depeche Mode

I have to say this list makes me sick.

Being a very big U2 fan and a growing Moz fan, it is very disturbing to see some of these bands even on the same list....

My biggest question would be :

OFFSPRING???!!??? Man, this world is going to crap...

I think the top 14 choices are a strong indication of the predominant age-group of the voters, don't you?

Just another example of how crap the so-called "alternative" scene really is... the extrordinarily dull Offspring is this beloved by the alternative crowd...? Good lord...

How many of these voters have actually heard Morrissey or the Smiths?
They have been fed the pap of MTV and top 40 (if there is even such a thing anymore). Chalk it up to the ignorance of the voters due to the lack of attention span of radio and TV PTB.

I know that this list is far too easy to pick on, but I couldn't resist the temptation to slander the beastie boys--the three biggest group of idiots found anywhere this side of all major american music press magazines. These morons talk about tibet this and tibet that, meanwhile their albums are chock full of emptyheaded fratboy rants. If I hear the statement "I don't like rap, but the Beastis Boys are the jam" from one more skinny white girl/boy with a bowl and a couple silly little tattoos, I think I'm going to go insane. They represent everything hypocritical and farcical about the music industry, and we can't stop lauding them yearly with all imaginable accolades. And if someone who is knowledgeable about their instrumental album attempts to accredit their musical ability, go suck on a ballon, because if they had made five other albums just like that, they would be far more honest and skilled a musical outfit, and sonically much more brave and inventive. The beastie boys are the perfect example of impeccable music marketing, the only section of the buying public they exclude are blacks--what, 15% of the usa?

ummm....okay...i have issues with this list....offspring..korn? what the hell?
i think a revote is in order, yes? i mean, the cure and the smiths are way WAY better than some of the bands that were ranked higher than them...

Good we're all getting along now - if you know what I mean? OK?!
Now, from THAT "alternative list" I'd choose:

1. THE SMITHS!!!
5. Nirvana
100's. Beck, Cure, Depeche Mode, U2

This KROQ list is a double-edged sword I believe. First you have The Smiths ranked #15, which is joyous news for Moz/Smiths fan to hear. But I think that the corporate suits at KROQ lumped together all the votes for The Smiths and Morrissey, thus giving a fairly high ranking. I went through all 106.7 bands, and saw people who shouldnt even be remotely considered great. In a city nicknamed "Moz Angeles", do you really think that Fiona Apple would single-handedly beat our Moz in a popularity contest? I think not. If there is any blame in Morrissey-Solo not making the list, then it lies in the corporate imbeciles that run KROQ.

I just have to say that it really doesn't matter about the list. I live here in Los Angeles and I don't listen to KROQ often, they are always playing the new number one hits, and if they consider to even play Smiths music, they only really play "How soon is now?" on Flash back weekends. Im not at all surprised at the list, but at least for the record, The Smiths should be #1

I can't believe that rage against the machine, the beastie boys, korn, offspring, made the list so high. However I'm glad that they had a little intelligence to even recognize The Smiths. U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, Tori Amos , and The Cure were definitley some taste of choice.

This KROQ of sh*t list illustrates why I do not listen to that station if i can help it.

KROQ hasn't really served the listeners who were fans of the Smiths in the 80s ever since "alternative" became a meaningless marketing label at the end of the 80s. In a way, they can't help being obnoxiously corporate. Even if they played good music, the station would still be unlistenable because of all those damn commerical ads that seem to run longer than the actual music played.

I think everyone is forgetting Morrissey, little by little. Older fans should introduce their music to younger fans. Morrissey needs more younger fans.

I've got to say, I'm pleasantly surprised to see Oingo Boingo on the list. That still doesn't explain the absence of the Pixies, Elvis Costello, or the Modern Lovers, though.

I can't understand why you people can't appreciate the musical genius of such beautiful bands such as offspring, beastie boys, and (my personal favorite of course) koRn. I mean come on people!

-You don`t know me but you don`t like me. You say you care less how I feel.
But how many of you that that sit and judge me. Have ever walked the the streets of Bakersfield?
Who then now bitches?!!!!!!!!-Korn

yu na now wata rouat ta ratat whow whatat..TWIST, TWIST
-koRn(twist)

You just can't deny the lyrical genius employed in the writing of these songs...pure beauty..ahh

This definitely rivals anything that Morrissey has ever written. With names like Fieldy, Head and Munky, how could koRn not be pure genius?

i think this reflects the musical hellhole we are in right now. let us pray that morrissey comes to the rescue like he did (at least for me!!) with "bona drag" at the start of the decade.

the firm entrenchment of this trip hop/electronica crap is reminiscent of techno and mc hammer prevailing at that time.

this @#!!! list is unsurpisingly sad. it's indicative of the general slouch of quality in the music kroq decides to broadcast. i think when they canned the poorman, it was the beginning of the end.

will radio stations quit sucking corporate cock for five seconds and play some decent music? is that too much to ask for?

how obvious it is that sorrow has cum...

How the hell does that sorry-ass, wanna be punk band, Blink 182 make it to #18?! What about R.E.M. and the Police?!!! I'm astonished that they even came that close to ranking near The Smiths! In my book and probably many other's, Blink 182 probably is not even worthy of a spot in the top 100!!!!

well the KROQ list is obviously silly, as are all list like this (for example the "top 100 novels of the century" or films or whatever). it's a pure and simple popularity contest, supported by many listners who were toddling around whilst many of you were out buying your costello records or whatever. meaning: it's a miracle that the smiths managed to achieve the top 20. i'm surprised. and the chap above who thought this was a good place to slam the beastie boys, why bother? the beastie boys are the least of our problems. true they have their share idiot fans, but who's to say they are excluding black people from buying their music? if so how did they start out on defjam and how come they continue to get much cred from very influencial black rappers? and how is it that you've included frat boys as the enenmy who will only by bboys cds and no other rap? all the frat boys i know love commerical black rappers as well as their bboys. 70% of rap music is bought by white people. plus the beastie boys put out a great magazine. why slam them for usuing their fame to promote the cause of the tibetian people? ok sorry this is way off track.

...I looked at the full list, and yes, many of the bands did not deserve to be on there. But frankly I'm happy the Smiths were as high as #15!!! And I'm equally happy that bands like R.E.M., The Clash and Social Distortion beat out Marylin Manson by a healthy margin. And the Dead Kennedys even made the list, albeit at 90 something... my one question though, is how Tom Waits got left off the list. He is one of the only truely origional musicians still putting out records today.

i would love to have the smiths on the top spot just like anyone else in this room but that is never going to happen.. it will only happen in a morrissey world.. if this vote was carried out in some other city.. some other town.. the results would be different.. perhaps the smiths would be #1.. or it wouldn't be on the top 100 at all. who knows.. and who cares.. i notice that some of us are unhappy with the results.. but that list doesn't measure what good music is.. good music is relative to the indivdual.. just because sublime or depeche mode is above the smiths in votes doesn't mean that they are better than the smiths.. or vice versa.. i think the truth is.. we are just out numbered.. there just happen to be more of them and little of us.. but so what.. my love for the smiths will never change.. no matter where they rank..

Alright! Its cool The Smiths are at #15! My other favorite group Save Ferris made it to #58! The Beastie Boys Kick arse they are the absolute coolest rap group in the Universe besides RUN-DMC and others. Give a little respect for the Beasties!

"Give some love and respect to the end!"
Beastie Boys
Sure Shot
and that line goes to Morrissey!

Everyone go buy Geri Halliwell's new album on June 15.

And yes I like the Spice Girls! But My life is Morrissey and The Smiths!

I think we should be happy that the Smiths are 15. I think the comments above by a couple of very intelligent folks summed it up perfectly when they said it's about popularity. Look at the Billboard charts where the Backstreet Boys and Ricky Martin hold the two top spots and draw your own conclusions, but I am going to say that the people who buy records are probably the people who vote, so the Offspring (who are high on the Billboard chart) are going to get votes on a large scale. Now my real bone to pick is with my beloved Depeche Mode. Depeche is really good pop music. But compare their lyrics with Smiths lyrics and there is no question who's superior. Come on..."Her first boy, his first girl...blah blah..in a world full of nothing though it's not love it means something" compared to "vivid and in your prime, you will leave me behind." I mention Depeche b/c ordinarily they share many of the same fans as the Smiths. I think logically Depeche is more popular because of marketing (where New Order especially is highly anemic). Maybe if the Smiths were still together and were still cranking out 'hits' they would have had a higher ranking. I think we all know this....

From a British persepective i just find it really odd that U2 and Depeche Mode, amongst others, appear on an "alternative" list. Here they are regarded as anything but.

Who cares what KRO-crap thinks? Perry Farrell is the godfather of what became known as alternative music - and Jane's Addiction ranked 28. the offspring and all those other pathetic excuses for a musical group cannot hold the proverbial candle to bands like Jane's, the Smiths, the Pixies, etc.
anon <[email protected]>
- Tue, Jun 08, 1999 at 17:46:20 (PDT)

U2 don't consider themselves "alternative" (whatever that means) either...

Labels are very stifling.

Moz and band make good music. That's my label ;]

I can even define this unique category!

1. Thoughtful, intelligent, meaningful lyrics.

2. Original and distinct melodies, rhythms, riffs. (I must admit, I like catchy riffs. Quite the opposite of Offspring, IMO.

I could list some more necessary components, but this limits my category of "good" music enough already - endlessly more so than the infinite "alternative"...

A little perspective: That a band that last released an album in 1987 and had at best a "cult" following in the States ranks #15 in 1999 is quite a feat. Sure, I personally would rank 'em higher, but you also must consider that most of the KROQ fan base is more than likely younger. Look at the majority of bands/performers who placed ahead of them...currently active, touring/recording and continuing to release material.
Nick <[email protected]>

Well that list is obscene frankly, but at least they made it on there which shows that some have longer memories..these all time polls tend to favour the current stuff, no surprises though, I knew that Americans fave British "alternative" bands were Depeche Mode and The Cure - both of whom are nowhere near The Smiths, I'm surprised New Order weren't there too..and U2 are always just hideous, alternative or whatever. It's a measure of how much The Smiths are still loved by their fans that they got on there..especially when you consider The Smiths never crossed over to the top 40 in America, they aren't just a band they're a way of life, and you can't just casually like them, you have to love them most, lol.

Hello,
I guess somethings in life will never change. I am referring to the poll. Who were the voters? Well, I guess they had to be included in the "populist" crowd considering they ONLY ranked Morrissey as #15. Some things in life, I guess we will have to accept yet, in our hearts we know the truth. :)

It is obvious that some people in this world really don't know anything about "music appreciation" I feel that people don't listen to music, but just hear it. The point Im trying to make is......listen, listen, listen. Morrissey/The Smiths would of
been #1 lyrically and not #15 musically.

Well...if you have even listened to KROQ recently, this list should come as no surprise! It is very interesting to see KROQ has virtually ignored all the very bands who helped put it on the map, except when they choose to play them on that stray holiday "Flashback Weekend"! That is supposed to atone for the other 360 days of the year that you do not hear them! But what is more insulting is the fact that when Morrissey does come to town, these charlatans are the first on the bandwagon attempting to promote him and make a fast buck! I'm sorry that should only be attempted by a station on which he actually appears on their daily playlist!

I'm 23 and I've lived in LA for the last 15 years. I went from listening to PRIATE radio (heavy metal) to KOST (mellow crap) to KROQ (I know, quite a range). I started listening to KROQ around 1992, that's a good 7 years now that I've listen to the station, so I think I have the right to say:

KROQ has turned into a piece of crap!

Let's face it, back in the late eighties and early nineties, KROQ played some pretty decent music... the Cure, Depeche Mode, a little bit of Suede, and of course Morrissey and the Smiths.

But what the heck happened within the last four or five years? Now all I get is the Offsprings, Blink 152, Beastie Boys, Korn, and other pretty worthless bands out there. I mean seriously, it's ridiculous. We are forced into listening to these crappy bands that does not deserve any airplay. NONE WHATSOEVER. If I have to hear that stupid, stupid song by Sugar Ray, I will have to shoot myself.

It's hard to believe that the OFFSPRING can be voted as #3 on the TOP 106.7 KROQ band of all time? How is that possible? Maybe because KROQ no longer play much music from across the pond, well with the exception of Depeche Mode or U2. It's a sad state of affairs, really.

The only thing I can say is that KROQ's morning show is the best one in L.A. But after 10am, I just turn my radio off, and put on a Morrissey/the Smiths CD.
