Gill Smith - true-to-you.net

6 April 2009

Morrissey would like to ask associates of The Smiths to spare a thought for Gill Smith who died this morning (April 6th) in London. Gill was 51 years old, and amongst many other things in her life, she had been The Smiths press officer/publicist from June 1984 to 1986. Gill was a vivacious, glamorous and witty character, a stern ally of The Smiths, and was loved and admired by everyone around her.

joe frady notes in the forum thread "Gill Smith woz 'ere...RIP" that Gill posted a response in the Marc Almond autobiography thread back in September 2008.

Morrissey: Southpaw Grammar reissue - No Allegiances

Excerpt:

Morrissey had wanted to use the Jake Walters shots of him wearing his smalls in the empty pool for the cover but we managed to talk him out of it, citing the need to differentiate this from the Greatest Hits releases. Morrissey agreed and dug out a series taken by Linder Sterling in El Paso with some fantastic shots of him in a denim jacket and Wayfarers… and a couple of shots of him looking like Will Young which we binned.

The new liner notes, Morrissey’s own Southpaw Grammar diaries, give an insight into the recording process, the tensions between the band and a candid take (for Morrissey) about what Southpaw Grammar means to him. As such, the text was given priority, with Morrissey insisting on increasing the type size larger… larger… larger… stop.

From jermainerogers.com:

One last thing: some of you in Houston, Texas or El Paso, Texas have seen Jermaine's first concert poster in a while hanging in select places around your communities. It's for upcoming shows by Morrissey. About the imagery, Jermaine says, ''This is the first concert print20commission I've accepted in 7 months... and it didn't take a lot of arm twisting: it's for Mr. Morrissey. The image takes place in a nightclub which has appeared as the setting for another print I did a year or so ago for RADIOHEAD. It's a freaky kind of place where in the low-lights, sweet smells, and loud music...any weird thing can happen. Moz sits flanked by 2 of his heroes...'The Slider' and Jimmy Dean." We've already begun to receive a flood of emails asking about this one. It will be available, soon. Stay tuned in. Here's a sneak peek:

The Decemberists' front man Colin Meloy has this to say about Morrissey in the latest AV Club interview:

"But in my defense, I remember having a slavish love for Morrissey in the time when he had his most detractors. I think post-Smiths, those first couple records, Viva Hate and Kill Uncle, you were most likely to read snarky comments about Morrissey in the press. And it was always interesting to me—you have an opportunity to be like, “They don’t have any clue how funny he is. They’re just kind of taking it all at face value.” That was the beauty of Morrissey. The thing about him I always loved is that there were certain songs that could be taken either way. They could be serious in this kind of maudlin narcissism, or he was being funny, and poking fun at himself. And either way, you could relate to it: You could either bask in that glow of fatalistic narcissism, or you could think it was funny. I always thought that was an interesting dynamic in his songwriting, and I can only aspire to have that kind of dynamic in my songs."

I live in Ireland and was somewhat shocked by something I saw while flicking around my TV channels earlier.

Our national broadcaster, RTE, has a show called "Heat" in which amateur chefs compete with each other. On the 31st of March 2009 edition one of the contestants was describing the produce that'd make up his menu, including duck, game pie and milk-fed veal...to the strains of "Oscillate Wildly".

Watching two chefs discussing their hope that people wouldn't be put off eating veal due to ethical concerns, to the strains of The Smiths, was a strange experience.

Moz should definetely have a word...
