Re: Southpaw Grammar/Maladjusted reissues

Official press release excerpt on Maladjusted:

‘Maladjusted’

Released in 1997, ‘Maladjusted’ was the follow up to ‘Southpaw Grammar’. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, the album features Morrissey’s most successful single in the decade between ‘Vauxhall and I’ (1994) and ‘You Are The Quarry’. ‘Alma Matters’ reached No.16 in the UK chart and was followed by the equally superb ‘Roy’s Keen’ and ‘Satan Rejected My Soul’. Well received by critics and fans alike, ‘Maladjusted’ merges Morrissey’s ballad craft with the glam-rock of his earlier work.

As with ‘Southpaw Grammar’, Morrissey has been actively involved in re-issuing ‘Maladjusted’. The album includes a new sleeve, b-sides, extensive liner notes by the artist, rare images and a completely different track sequence. This version also contains the controversial ‘Sorrow Will Come In The End’, which was withdrawn from the original British release. The track features Morrissey intoning, rather than singing, over a backing of manic strings and the beat of a judge’s gavel – an obvious reference to The Smith’s bitter royalties dispute.

Tracklisting:
1. Maladjusted
2. Ambitious Lovers
3. Trouble Loves Me
4. Lost*

The Guardian on Saturday mentioned that Morrissey allowed author Marian Keyes to name her novel about domestic violence This Charming Man.

She also successfully approached singer V V Brown to cover This Charming Man for domestic violence charity Women's Aid; it's released this month.

Take That sing about The Smiths!

The B-side on their new single references the Smiths (apparently!). It's called 1984 (or just 84) and features the lyric "the Smiths were riding high in the charts" (or something similar).

For the non-Brits among you, TT are absolutely enormous over here these days; by far the most successful band in the country (in terms of airplay, record sales, tours etc).

Uncleskinny sends the info on the symposium:

Just days prior to Morrissey’s Irish leg of his 2009 tour, the University of Limerick (UL) is hosting a two day symposium on April 24th and April 25th to celebrate his 20 year career as a solo-recording artiste. This event will feature 20 Irish and international speakers presenting papers on Morrissey which will examine, amongst other themes, his iconic status amongst immigrant Latino fans in Los Angeles, Morrissey and Italian popular culture as well as his use of ambiguity in the construction of his identity.

Last April over 250 people attended a half-day symposium on Morrissey and The Smiths at UL, with the event attracting fans from all over Ireland and beyond as well as widespread media interest.

One of the event’s organisers and Head of the Department of Sociology at UL, Dr. Eoin Devereux said “UL’s Morrissey Symposium will present the European premiere of Kerri Koch’s (2008) fascinating documentary on Morrissey’s Latino fans called ’Passions Just Like Mine’. There will also be a panel discussion on the significance of Morrissey as a cultural icon which will include Len Brown, author of the recent best-selling book ‘Meetings with Morrissey’."

It won’t be all study however. UL’s two-day celebration of Morrissey will include an evening gig (on Friday 24th)in Dolan’s Warehouse, Limerick, by leading tribute band These Charming Men. The band has re-created the music of Morrissey and The Smiths all over the world and have recently played at the Smiths Convention in Los Angeles. A full list of conference speakers and further details will shortly be available on the Department of Sociology and Irish World Academy of Music and Dance websites - http://www.ul.ie/sociology/ and http://www.ul.ie/~iwmc.

The event will take place in the Foundation Building, University of Limerick. Tickets: 25€ (+booking fee) includes entrance to These Charming Men Gig, refreshments and lunch on Saturday 25th. From March 2nd Tickets may be booked here Tel: 00 353 (061) 331549 or Locall 1890 61 61 61.
