Ringleader Of The Tormentors: New album title, producer, engineer, and release information; Morrissey’s description of the new album.

3rd October 2005

Production on the new Morrissey album has been undertaken by Tony Visconti, who is in Rome with Morrissey and the band. The album should be completed by November 1st, and is entitled Ringleader Of The Tormentors.

Tony Visconti is most famous for production on all of the early albums by T.Rex and David Bowie.

Jeff Saltzman, who was originally named as producer, could not undertake the project.

The album is engineered by Marco Origel, who is from the San Francisco area.

Ringleader Of The Tormentors will be released on Attack early in 2006. Morrissey is delighted with the album which he describes as “the most beautiful—perhaps the most gentle, so far.”

It's been brought to my attention that there are a few files being circulated on the web purporting to be unreleased Smiths instrumentals, specifically two from The Queen Is Dead sessions.

Having heard these files for myself, I can verify that these are definitely NOT unreleased Smiths tracks and bear no relation to the wealth of outtakes and untitled instrumentals I had access to when researching Songs That Saved Your Life.

Rather, these are most likely working demos from the solo Whyte/Boorer years circa the mid 1990s. I say this because I've heard working roughs from the Vauxhall to Maladjusted period and they're all in this same vein, both musically and in terms of recording quality. The unreleased Smiths tracks sound very, very different.

There are numerous Whyte and Boorer demos of this nature, many of which were given titles which have since become notorious 'lost Morrissey songs' - eg; "Stay As You Are", "Laughing Annie" etc. Other unreleased/working titles for solo Morrissey songs that I know of but which have yet to surface include "Nightmare", "Hanratty", "Fast Car, Sharp Bend, Goodbye" and "The Leeches Go On Removing" (the latter a Maladjusted demo which of course became a lyric on Quarry instead).

So, purely in the interests of people not being duped or paying daft money on eBay for alleged Smiths outtakes that are actually something entirely different, I hope this information is of some use.

Best wishes,
Simon Goddard

Excerpt from Genteel Giant - Sunday Herald

He’s also the best gag writer Coronation Street never had and the patron saint of those shy, sensitive souls who flit around the edges of British cultural life. “It is both boast and excuse,” Bennett has written of his reputation as a shrinking violet. “Shyness invites interference, though, because it seems an evasion, an opacity with the real self occluded.” Shy also means you miss out on the fun.

Given all that, it’s no surprise that former Smiths singer Morrissey cites Bennett as one of his idols. Here is a rock star whose lyrics speak of alienation and shyness and whose formative influences were the kitchen sink dramas of the 1960s and Hilda Ogden’s knockabout camp – the very stuff from which Bennett spins his own works. Curating the London-based arts festival Meltdown at the Royal Festival Hall in 2004, Morrissey said of Bennett’s oeuvre: “It’s largely the sodden gloom of the north – the walled-in lack of choice that he loves. The family is a battleground and every character trembles on the edge of confession. Sex is on everybody’s mind but nobody says anything. This, I think, is Alan himself.”

Rocksnob has an mp3 today purporting to be an unreleased Morrissey track:

"Gaz sent me this Morrissey track that was leaked back before 'You Are The Quarry' was released," she writes.

I've listened over and over, and I don't think it's Morrissey but rather someone doing a great impersonation, from the lyrics to the vocals and Spanish bits. But you never know with demos - it's a great song either way. Does anyone know what this song might be?

Smiths sound off in theatrics - Irish Independent

30th Sep 2005 - ARTIST-based musicals are a touch-and-go area; they can range from the downright dire, like the Beat-les’ Sgt Pepper movie, to the successful and acclaimed likes of Mamma Mia, the musical celebrating ABBA’s work.
