2004 music poll – results! - Manchester Online

TWO singers from two legendary Manchester acts were picked out as the winners of ManchesterOnline's 2004 music poll by hundreds of our users - Morrissey and Mark Owen.

Former Smiths singer Morrissey capped a knockout year by winning our album of the year poll for his comeback effort You Are The Quarry. Moz edged out competition from former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown’s latest LP Solarized and decks’n’ double bass duo Fingathing’s Big Red Nebula Band.

AFTER seven years out of the limelight, Morrissey returned in 2004 with two stunning hometown shows, four top ten singles and an almost universally-acclaimed seventh solo album.

from Earvolution:
Elliott Smith, U2, Muse & Modest Mouse Among Best of 2004

There have been a handful of standout bands in the last four years, but this decade still lacks a defining sound. The newsmakers of 2004 were veterans -- U2, Morrissey, Tom Waits, and the Pixies. But if you take the time to look a little closer, you'll see the beginnings of a new evolution in music. Geographically, Glasgow and Montreal emerged as new music hot spots while New York became as interesting as it has been since the days of Velvet Undergound and the Ramones. Collectively, we have seen a number of talented newcomers break through. While the music of 2004's newcomers seems to borrow heavily from past movements such as new wave and post-punk, it signals a change of course that will hopefully bring about a new great hybrid.

16. Morrissey You Are the Quarry (Sanctuary Records) Released: 5/18/04
The Moz is back and as wonderfully self-absorbed as ever. After a seven year hiatus and a couple of disappointments before that, Morrissey came back swinging with his best since Bona Drag. His non-apologetic lyrics are wordplay at its finest since Cole Porter.

Moodysson, a Swedish director who was praised by Ingmar Bergman, puts The Cure as his main influence, with Morrissey coming in at 5th!

"...I was putting together a list - just because I like lists - of the things that have influenced me most in my life. And at number one was the Cure. At two, three and four were Swedish music and writers you won't have heard of. And Morrissey was at number five. I tried to put some films in there but the first director was David Lynch at number eight, and that was more because of Twin Peaks than anything else. So you see, Bergman really was not a major influence."

The Swedish Trackslistan is the most popular radio chart in Sweden, now in its 26th year. It is solely based on votes from listeners, mainly between 12-30. Before You are the quarry, a chart entry at the bottom half would be considered a giant success.

In the 2004 wrap-up:
- Morrissey 1st on the male solo artist chart
- Morrissey 2nd on the overall artist chart
- "First of the gang to die" 3rd on the overall song chart

Now that's what I call quite good.

Since we are short on 2005 news for now, there still seems to be 2004 items out there to send in.

This actually appeared in last Sunday's pink section in which some SF Chronicle critics each had a column to reflect on for their particular area of expertise. Morrissey has a short mention for returning. He was not mentioned in regards to the cancellation of Lollapalooza.
