Tonight in Liverpool, Neil & Tim Finn played at the Liverpool Empire.
For the first encore, Johnny Marr came on and they played 'There is a light that never goes out'.

Then, Neil was saying how sorry he was to hear of John Peel's untimely death - especially as they were playing in his hometown.
Someone in the crowd shouted 'Play Teenage Kicks' (refering to the seminal Undertones classic song).

Johnny Marr picked up his guitar and not only played, but sang the song too. The trio then finished with a version of 'Ferry across the Mersey'.

My friend attended the gig and rang me straight afterwards.

Such a little thing writes:

Legendary Radio 1 DJ, John Peel, has suffered a heart attack whilst on a working holiday in Peru, and died this morning.

Of course, Mr Peel, worked with The Smiths and promoted the band through his sessions on Radio 1 (Hatful of Hollow), and became a legend in his own right. Everyone who is involved with pop/rock music will be extremely sad to hear this news.

May the mighty Peel rest in peace.

Pedro also writes:

Peel was one of the early supporters of The Smiths on UK radio and the band recorded a number of sessions with him in the early 1980s.

He once recalled meeting Morrissey at a service area on the M1 motorway.

"These are my favourite motorway service areas," said Morrissey.

Peel said later: "How odd that anyone would have a favourite motorway service area!"

He went on to praise Moz as one "rare in this day and age who delights in the use of the English language."

Luge also writes:

John Peel, who broke The Smiths with a series of oft-repeated Peel Sessions has died aged 65.

A sad sad day for the entire UK (and beyond) music industry - a man who bucked trends, never had playlists foisted on him, and discovered cutting edge artists in all genres - punk, world, indie, goth, rockabilly, techno and more.

To announce the French gig, since 10 days in the subway of Paris we can see in 1 desk’s station on 2 a big MORRISSEY GIG POSTER (picture).

It is mentioned :

“ Gig in the “Zénith”, 22 november 2004.
      UNIQUE DATE IN EUROPE.”

That means that no gig (excepted UK ones and Paris) will be done by Moz.

The poster is around 1,60 meter on 1.10 meter.

Morrissey, Teen Chic

Excerpt:

Great pop is made by fans, and there is perhaps no greater fan than Morrissey. During his teenage years, the Smiths front man wrote dozens of letters to British music magazines like NME and Melody Maker praising (and trashing) bands in outsize, almost campy prose. This week, Morrissey extends his fan-boy résumé by releasing (and writing the liner notes for) Lonely Planet Boy, a compilation of the mostly out-of-print music of his childhood idols, the failed glam band Jobriath. Here are some excerpts from his letters to the editor, culled from Internet archives of Morrissey’s juvenilia...

Just to confirm that on VH2 on Tuesday 26th of October (aired previously on Oct. 23), they will be screening a Smiths gig that was filmed in Germany during the height of their powers. It is on at 22:00 for 1 hour and 20 mins.

This is very exciting as i was not aware that any of the music channels held such footage. Why so long to show the adoring fans?

Anyway, enjoy!!

Sagely Advice writes:

In the final episode of Early Doors (series 2) which was shown last week in the UK (BBC2), "Girlfriend In A Coma" was played at the 21st birthday party disco of one of the characters. If I remember correctly, Smiths music was also used in the first series.
