  • Where are Morrissey's "cease & desist letters" when you need one?

  • A hell of alot of work went into this and it's a unique and original take on the songs. Give it a chance to grow on you before firebombing with hate.
I like some of these covers here better than any others I've heard. May work better in smaller doses, but I'll return to hear the rest for sure.

  • I listened to "Handsome Devil" & to my surprise found it quite intriguing. It's very different & I really like it.
After that I gave "Nowhere Fast" a try & was happily surprised again.

I hardly ever hear a cover version that I like, but these ones are special...she's really doing her own thing.

  • This is an admirable and moreover beautiful project by an ardent devotee, with innovative and intricate vocal complexities that is meant as an homage to the group we love. Even more admirable is the fact that the recordings are simply her voice with no instrumentation--incredible in terms of what she was able to create with only her emotions and voice as a guide. One hopes that Morrissey would be touched by her gesture and labor of love. I for one hopes that she neither ceases nor desists.

cos no one ever turns to me to say ...
  • For me, there is no better song that better represents the Smiths than "William It Was Really Nothing" - it's that, followed by (or even tied with) "Stop Me..."

I appreciate the time and effort that goes into any cover of one great artist by other. But too often, the cover versions pale in comparison to the original, either as simply a failed attempt or a great over-reaching (in trying to differentiate between theirs and the original version, the feel and appeal of the first is lost in translation).

This is not the case with Whaley's version of "William". I'm sure the singer would agree that the original is boss - after all, what is a cover but a devoted show of love and admiration for the piece that breathed life into it? But ... well, I'm a fan. It's on Facebook. Search [email protected] and you'll see, it's documented.

Honestly, the rendition of "William" here is marvelous. I don't think I've ever used that word before, but it's fitting.

Whaley has taken the original and made it her own, yet still achingly true to the original. In the best way possibly.

All at once, the song is reminiscent of the Girl Group Greats (the Triple Gs). It has strangely clean Spector sound. I can almost hear Ronnie of the Ronnettes belting this one out.

It is plodding and murky, akin to Marvin Gaye's "Heard it Through the Grapevine".

I can hear some Kate Bush in there.

And on top of all that, it's some trippy ass shit! And that's a great thing.

My wife is pissed at me for recently discovering just how much I spend on grass each month. Spending-wise, I've got to lay low for a while.

When the heat is off my back, I'll purchase the whole set. Pinky Swear.

  • The artwork is all wrong. You've compressed the whites and way over-tinted it. And graffiti? Whether or not the photo was taken in America, it looks like America, not the north of England circa 1956-1964.

And that typeface is way off...

  • ...Smiths fans are so damned hypercritical of EVERYTHING. It's annoying. "The music's wrong, the sleeve's wrong, the typeface is wrong, the concept is wrong"...Seriously, if you contribute nothing artistic or creative to the world--besides your incessant whinging, bitching and armchair critiquing, then what right to you have to speak? Scholarly criticism is fine and a necessary evil, I suppose, but what I read here for the most part is purely contrarian blabbity blah. Whom among you has the perseverance and skill to sing every Smiths song with nothing but your voice? And the creative and technical sense to layer track upon track to achieve what she has achieved? And you could listen to these tracks FOR FREE (at least during their creation). It cost you nothing. It did you no harm. So it may not have been your cuppa. That's fine and natural: not everyone can like everything. But can you not at least see that Janice Whaley is a dedication fan, like yourself? That this is how SHE has chosen to express that love? I do happen to like her project. Very much so. I don't expect it to be The Smiths. Give her work another listen. Some of it is quite haunting, quite beautiful, and above all a CREATIVE approach to this music. Okay, Hyde Park soapbox speech has now concluded. --Sniping Rage

  • is the best set of Smiths covers I've ever heard. Her vocal skill in reproducing not only the vocals on these wonderful compositions but she nailed Johnny's chords on these songs. Do you know how much, love dedication and respect that takes? I am certain Moz and Marr will love this. It's stunning.

  • Listening to this music caused an unpleasant nervous condition, not unlike what Morrissey penned above.

    This is God-awful.

After trying a few songs, I gave it a shot, I had to immediately listen to the real stuff to cleanse my system - like an auditory exorcism.

This is pure solipsistic garbage that no real Smiths fan would ever attempt or conceive.

The real and best tribute is to continue to listen to their music.
