I know that the Smiths will never reform, and if they were to try, it wouldn't be the Smiths at all.
Therefore, I'd rather sink a few pints of strong draft and dance my ass off to This Charming Band any day of the week as opposed to never hearing the music performed live.

Having seen several of these imitation bands and remembering what it was like to see The Smiths or Morrissey live then I can confirm that they are nothing like the real thing. Just someone's perception of it which of course is not wrong, just not for me. I don't buy this "nearest chance to see The Smiths live" thing. They are nothing like it. If they were then I suspect they wouldn't be a covers band.
I also don't think going to see The Jimi Hendrix Experience is ever going to be anything like what seeing Jimi live was.

Now, of course none of us are that good. Just exaggerated compliments, clearly. But those compliments do come from people who, like you, saw The Smiths live. Maybe their memory is different than yours, or maybe somehow your recollection is true and theirs hazy. My point is just that there are plenty of people out there who saw The Smiths too and whose opinion on this is just as well-informed, and plenty of those same people happily enjoy tribute shows.
Make it a six pack and drink it all before our show. You'll be amazed how good we sound. It's uncanny!

It's NOT the real thing. That's the point.
If done well, it's a fitting and heartfelt tribute.
Take Super Diamond, for example. They are a Neil Diamond Tribute, and they take it really far. Glittering shirts, corny stage banter... The works. Kind of like the real Neil Diamond.
What keeps it from being a parody, is the fact that they are all incredibly proficient at playing their instruments, and every last one of them genuinely loves the source material and play it in a comepletely sincere manner.
I don't go to see them because I pine for Neil Diamond.
I go to see them because they are good, a lot of fun, and a better alternative to sitting around the house on a friday night.
It'll never be "anything like" seeing the Original band live. It's more like hanging out with like minded friends with similar music tastes in a festive atmosphere.
I'm with Ben. Make it a six pack, and I'll buy you another beer if you actually show up.

The man has given the world some of the best, most thought-provoking, emotional and transcendental music that it will ever know, and for that I am truly grateful. His output has enriched my life to the point that it feels like one of the brighter facets of my soul, and I can't imagine what my world would be like without it. Granted, I have many other musicians that touch my spirit in one way or another, but Morrissey (as silly as it sounds) gets "me". (And you, and you and you and you.)
It's all due to his use of vague terms. "The one", etc. It's a clever tactic, and I think he knows it. By eluding gender and specifics, he's made a peculiar brand of elated heartbreak that is accesable to all. Genius.
Now that I've veered 3 miles off-topic, I'll bring it back home.
Jeez, I wish This Charming band would play Portland again, or at the very least, play in San Francisco on Sunday, december 5th.
I love a good, heartfelt tribute band.
