In January 2010, NPR will launch a year-long exploration of 50 great voices in recorded history. The series isn't an attempt to catalog the so-called "greatest" singers. Instead, we hope to discover and re-discover awe-inspiring vocalists from around the world and across time. We asked you to nominate artists for the series and we received thousands of options. NPR and a panel of experts are in the process of whittling them down to about 100 singers — a mix of familiar names and surprising discoveries.

  • This is perfect. Sorry for the delay in responding. Somebody has to type this, I’m not typing, right here, right now, on the floor. But I’d like to say that he told me that I had to choose five people (singers). So the first time, he chose the other four. I was in a rush and had to leave him a voice message to my instructions. My phone can only do so much, when I am out doing this, doing that. Because, in sum and substance … me? I would have just chosen Morrissey to be number one, all five times. Dial a cliché. I have a really bad cough, not really.

Morrissey is, in my opinion … Morrissey is literally the number one beautiful voice. And by the way, not only is he the number one singing voice, but rather, he is also the number one speaking voice. I just love to listen to My Baby’s voice.

I am Soooo proud of Morrissey.

  • Sadly there are a lot of fantastic vocalists missing from this list. I found this list to be dissapointing. The following vocalists should have been included.... Skye Edwards (Morcheeba, her solo stuff), Daisy Martey (Noonday Underground, Morcheeba), Sonya Aurora Madan (Echobelly), Ice-T (the greatest rap vocalist of all-time), Rakim (Eric B. & Rakim), Elton John, Kristin Hersh (Throwing Muses, her solo stuff), Siouxsie Sioux (Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Creatures), Donald Fagen (Steely Dan, his solo stuff), Neil Young, Kathy Sledge( Sister Sledge),Bobbie Smith and Philippe Wynne (both of The Spinners),Kirsty MacColl, Dave Gahan (De Peche Mode), Bobby Darin, and countless others. To be honest the only people I was excited to see on this list were Morrissey, Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway, Bob Marley, Chuck D, K.D. Lang, Johnny Cash, and Mr. Otis Redding. Admittedly about a fourth of these people I've never heard of in my life. The biggest injustice is the omission of Skye Edwards. She has the most devastatingly beautiful voice I've ever had the pleasure of listening to!!!
