Pete Doherty: "To Punch Morrissey" - German Weekly "Die Zeit" It seems that Pete Doherty still has some bad feelings against Moz. “To Punch Morrissey” http://www.zeit.de/2009/40/Traum-40 The German weekly "Die Zeit" has a section called “I have a dream”, where people talk about their dreams and wishes. This week, Pete Doherty talks about taking revenge on Morrissey for beeing humiliated by him. The article starts with Pete talking about his early life - listening to the Smiths and his dream of becoming Morrissey. I tried to translate the main part: “Years later I actually met Morrissey, very briefly. My first band The Libertines played for him as opening act. We hardly talked. And then he said to the press some very unkind things about me, concerning my drug addiction, called me a cliché, thought I'd try to do something that would have already done Sid Vicious. Honestly, with Morrissey's knowledge about drugs you can fill the back of a postage stamp. Then he did something ugly: After I was expelled from the Libertines, he replaced the New York Dolls-sticker on his lapel with Libertines motifs. He enjoyed my humiliation. I felt hurt. When I see Morrissey the next time, I would punch him. And when he is lying on the ground, I would give him my hand. I remove the dust from his clothes - and then I would offer him a collaboration as an act of reconciliation.”

I also think that threatening Morrissey (or any other musician) really is not in Pete's best interest.
There is a flip-side, however. If an artist knows that a fellow artist or collaborator has a drug problems--then it is best to be supportive however possible. Being supportive shows class.
Unfortunately, we don't know what support Morrissey may or may not have given Pete. For Pete to cry now seems a bit lame. There seemed to be times when Pete when WAY out of his way to glorify his drug abuse--that is only my opinion.

It seems to be the only puritanical torch that the cardigan wearing Morrissey fans have left. Since the whole celibacy thing become old hat, the only thing that modern Morrissey puritans are left with is the whole matriarchal anti-drug stance.
It's unfortunate. I though the only bright spot in Morrissey's career these days is the shedding of the more self-righteous fans that characterized his early solo years.

Inevitably... "Hey!!! You know Morrissey's a FAG, don't you?" which was always met with- "Yes. And?" He may be rather masculine at points with his image, but there's no doubt in my mind that he is into men. I appreciate that he'd rather focus on his music and not divulge details of his sex life-(well, aside from lyrically) But I get the feeling that someday he will come out, and much like when Michael Stipe did, it will be met with shrugs and yawns. It sure isn't the 80's anymore where such things were mildly shocking.
