The scenes that time forgot - The Guardian
Remember when Romo ruled the pop charts? Of course you don't. Dave Simpson hears the stories of the bands that jumped on a likely-looking bandwagon – then saw it stall

  • It was another infuriatingly non-critical piece of Guardian music journalism. Some bloke from Secret Affair was given free reign to spout how great his band were, better than any punk band (cos they were all middle class - apparently...)Secret Affair were very mediocre, couldn't really pen a good tune, and nowhere near the best of the mod revival bands (I'd nominate The Chords on that front)

The most interesting part of it was about "Britfunk", and how young black British musicians were able to garner themselves an unexpected career in the music biz, having initially pretty much taken on the punk DIY ethic, and later honed their craft. Would've liked to have read more about the best of them; Linx.

Each of the scenes could've had a feature to themselves. Another example of the Guardian's rather shallow/trite approach to its coverage of pop music...

  • Could someone tell me if Boz was later a member of Norwich band Fireball XL 5 ?

If so, I've recently come across some old b&w pics that may be of interest to Moz fans...
