Lloyd Cole finished his soundcheck and was walking through the Cathedral Quarter. Who should he bump into on the street but Morrissey, in town for a couple of concerts and staying in The Merchant. According to eyewitness accounts they literally hailed one another in the street - not having met in two decades - and had a casual natter, Belfast style.

  • But wasn't Morrissey supposed to be in his sick bed near the RAH on Monday???

  • One of the rumours back in the day was that Moz had a huge crush on Mr. Cole.

  • Click the link to Lloyd's site and check the comments attached to the story and you'll see Lloyd Cole personally confirms the contents of his chat with Moz in the street...

  • Cole says that talking about his mother's gift to Morrissey was "the only thing that could have made the encounter agreeable" - so he really doesn't like the Moz?! Full comment from LC here:

Indeed I did spot him on the other side of the street with a blonde woman. I had no time to think so I yelled 'Morrissey!'. We had a very brief chat. Our first since 1987. He managed to remember the gift from my mother - a briefcase which he still has, which was possibly the only conversation piece that could have made the encounter agreeable. That was that - I commented on how well he was looking. He was. I'm sure he tried not to notice that I was carrying my own guitar

I don't think Lloyd holds any grudges against Morrissey. Having seen Lloyd in concert many times (Sydney, Edinburgh, Sweden, Dublin, Galway) he has often mentioned Morrissey in his between-song banter, and always talks about Moz with respect. I think he likes the fact that he's not the only one from the early 80's who is still able to take to the stage with pride.
