Morrissey: Southpaw Grammar reissue - No Allegiances

Excerpt:

Morrissey had wanted to use the Jake Walters shots of him wearing his smalls in the empty pool for the cover but we managed to talk him out of it, citing the need to differentiate this from the Greatest Hits releases. Morrissey agreed and dug out a series taken by Linder Sterling in El Paso with some fantastic shots of him in a denim jacket and Wayfarers… and a couple of shots of him looking like Will Young which we binned.

The new liner notes, Morrissey’s own Southpaw Grammar diaries, give an insight into the recording process, the tensions between the band and a candid take (for Morrissey) about what Southpaw Grammar means to him. As such, the text was given priority, with Morrissey insisting on increasing the type size larger… larger… larger… stop.

  • looking forward to reading the liner notes, and hearing the unreleased tracks. the package looks great too, maybe the slickest-looking moz release since beethoven, which was always something of a favourite of mine.

when exactly is this coming out again?

I'm assuming swimming trunks, but who know.

I'm almost sure you can do better than that.

  • I posted about the similarities between young Moz and Will Young before - if there was to be a biopic of Moz they could do worse than hire Will Young

  • I've never heard that before? Does anyone know what that's about?

The lineup was Alain, Boz, Johnny Bridgewood, and Spencer. Same band as before (minus Spencer) and after through '07.

  • Were those Linder Sterling pics really taken in 1995? If not, then they have no business accompanying an album which was originally released in 1995.

  • Looks like we were right about the cover art. Still, it's a crap re-issue. He just wants to get the sales numbers over 100,000 for each of his albums.

  • Sounds like a very personal release.

I will snatch it from the shelves at Virgin Megastore before the doors close for good (in May). I will miss how good it feels to buy a new release from there.

    cheers,

  • There are several other details about other Moz album art, including reasons for typography, individual icons, etc...

Very interesting read, and I FINALLY found a decent quality version there of the Moz crest!!!

  • Nice of Moz to make up for missing the Culture Show interview by using a photo of Mark Kermode in the artwork!

  • So Moz was going to use the same photographs for the Southpaw remaster as he had for the All You Need Is Me single? Thats just cheap.

Love the images that are going to be used instead though. And with Moz liner notes and extra songs this is an essential purchase.

He wanted a different photo from a very similar photo shoot. It showed him standing in an empty pool, barechested, scruffy and unshaved.

The one he finally went for is much better. I don't know what it is with that series of pool photos, but his head is always at a weird angle. His eyes also looked weird in the photo he originally wanted.
