Depeche Mode: The Y! Music Interview - Yahoo! Music blogs

I'd like think what we did was... pave a little pathway with bands like ourselves, the Cure, The Smiths... saying 'anybody can do this, you don't have to be on MTV'.

  • Back in a Spin interview in 1987, when asked which other bands he'd have liked to have been in, Gahan namechecked The Smiths and The Cure as acts that never "toed the line"...at least he's consistent. And like them or loathe them, Depeche Mode have left an enormous footprint on contemporary pop while remaining one of the biggest cult acts in the world. Pretty exemplary songbook to boot.

He makes a very interesting point. When I was a child in the 80's, The Smiths, The Cure & Depeche Mode were the three bands that really inspired me and were able to articulate what I was feeling. Here in America, they got almost no coverage on MTV, except 120 Minutes which was on Sunday nights at midnight or something like that. Being from Long Island, we were very lucky that we had 92.7 WLIR radio that brought us these musical treasures from England. This was a time before the internet and ipods, so it was really hard to hear their music, let alone see them. But they stuck to their principles, made the music they wanted to make and refused to sell out in order to reach a wider audience. I now have my own band but, they continue to inspire me to this day. Check us out at www.myspace.com/entrope09, if you would be so kind.

P.S. I can't wait to see Depeche Mode in August at MSG!
